|The Game Story:|
|SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team outscored Dickinson
College 5-1 in the second half to pull away for a 10-7 win on Tuesday
afternoon in Salem, VA. This was the second meeting between the two
squads with the Maroons improving to 2-0 in the games. Overall this
season, the 12th-ranked Maroons improve to 4-1. The Red Devils fall to
1-2 on the 2004 campaign.
Trailing 6-5 at the half, the Maroons quickly found themselves behind by two goals when Dickinson^Òs Brian Read scored his third goal of the game. That goal gave the Red Devils a 7-5 lead with 9:38 remaining in the third quarter. That, however, would be the last time Dickinson would beat Roanoke keeper Matt Madalon (Darien, CT/Darien).
Behind by the two goals, the Maroons scored the final five of the game. Kris Davis (Parkton, MD/Hereford) started the run with a fastbreak goal off of a Mike Chase (Webster, NY/Webster) assist. Sophomore Chris Keating (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) tied the score at seven with his fourth goal of the game, that with 6:26 left in the third.
Davis netted the game-winning goal with 6:28 left in the contest, scoring an unassisted goal as he moved from behind the cage and scored on a diving shot. Jeff Pattison (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island) ripped a 15-yard goal on an assist by Dan Reed (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) and Garrett Yaralian (Fripp Island, SC/Mt. Lakes) capped the scoring with 59 seconds to play. Led in large part senior defender Brian Gallagher (Westfield, NJ/Westfield), the Maroon defense limited the Red Devils to just 11 shots in the second half, eight of which were stopped by Madalon.
Keating got the game^Òs scoring going, but Read quickly tied the game at one. After goals by Keating and Reed gave the Maroons a 3-1 lead, Dickinson^Òs Drew Peace scored the first of his three consecutive goals to bring the Red Devils to within one after one. Peace had a hand in three of Dickinson^Òs four goals in the second quarter, scoring the first two and assisting on the third, a goal from Ed Boyd. With the game tied at five, Read got his second goal of the day to give DC a 6-5 halftime lead.
Keating finished the game with four goals for the Maroons, who also got two goals and two assists from both Reed and Davis. Pattison added a goal and an assist, with Chase adding two assists. In all, Roanoke seniors accounted for six of the team^Òs nine in the second half alone. Senior Colin Burke (Rancho Sante Fe, CA/Torrey Pines) also won five of seven face-offs in the second half. Madalon finished with 12 saves, five in the fourth quarter.
Peace tallied the three goals and assist, with Read finishing with the three scores. Andy Brown and Flynn Burch each assisted on one goal for the Red Devils who got 11 saves from sophomore goalie Tom Wilson.
