The Game Story:
Keating and Madalon Lift RC to Win Over Hampden-Sydney, RC 6-1

SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team outscored Hampden-Sydney 5-3 in the second half of play in an 11-9 victory over the Tigers on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Maroons, ranked seventh in the latest USILA Division III national poll, improve to 6-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Tigers, who are rated 17th in the nation, fall to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

The two teams played to a 6-6 tie in the first 30 minutes of play, with the Maroons holding a 4-3 lead after one and the Tigers rebounding to outscore RC 3-2 in the second. The Tigers appeared to have a big momentum swing late in the second quarter, when the Maroons, immediately after scoring a goal, were called for two unsportsmanlike non-releasable penalties. The Tigers held the ball for the final 19 seconds of the half and gained possession to start the third.

A man down for 1:40 to start the second half, the Maroons created a turnover and 1:34 into the second half got a man-down goal from Adam Leahy. The Maroons then went up by two goals, 8-6, when Jon Mason scored the second of his two goals with 12:07 left on the clock. The Tigers, however, responded to even the score with 10:16 left in the third quarter. Michael Via scored an unassisted goal and Thomas Jennings evened the score with a one-on-one move from behind the cage.

The Maroons, however, took the lead for good on Leahy’s second goal of the half, finishing a pass from Tug Schroeder to make the score 9-8 late in the third period. The Maroons then scored the first two goals of the final period, one a fastbreak goal from Schroeder and the second a slashing goal from freshman Zack Thomas, to take an 11-8 lead. Jennings scored the fourth of his goals to make the score 11-9 with 5:56 to play. The Maroons were able to limit the HSC chances the rest of the way, giving up just five shots in the final 15 minutes of action.

The Maroons opened the game’s scoring, a goal by Chris Keating, on a Schroeder assist, with 9:59 left in the first period. The Tigers then scored the next three goals, one from defenseman John Pritzlaff, who then assisted on a Sean McChesney goal with 5:16 left in the first, a goal that made the score 3-1. The Maroons then rattled off three straight scores in the first, including a Matt Duke man-up score, and then got the first of the second period to take a 5-3 lead. The Tigers got goals from Ryan Harrington, Jennings, and Via to take a 6-5 lead in the second. Roanoke’s Dan Reed scored with 19 seconds left in the half to even things up at the break.

Keating finished the day with two goals and three assists, while Matt Madalon made 12 saves for the Maroons and finished with a team-best 10 groundballs. Hampden-Sydney’s Jeremy Bull made 19 saves, 10 in the first half, seven in the third quarter alone. Jennings added an assist to his four goals.
