Roanoke vs. Salisbury

The Game Story:
SALEM, VA--The top-ranked Salisbury University Sea Gulls rolled to an 18-8 win over 12th ranked Roanoke College Maroons in Division III men^s lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Sea Gulls improve to 6-0 overall on the season, while the Maroons fall to 3-1. The win gave the Sea Gulls a 9-8 all-time lead in the series and was their sixth consecutive win over Roanoke dating back to the 1993 season. Roanoke last beat SU during the 1992 season.

Salisbury opened the game with the first four goals, with Scott Simmons getting on the board first with 12:08 to play in the first quarter. Casey Olejniczak, Andy Arnold, and Justin Smith all followed with goals over the next 1:50 to give the Sea Gulls the quick 4-0 advantage. Olejniczak and Arnold scored just 18 seconds apart, while Smith^s tally came with 10:18 remaining on the clock. Roanoke was able to finally get on the board with 6:43 to play, a goal from senior attackman Kris Davis. Smith scored with 38 seconds left in the quarter and SU held a 5-1 lead after 15 minutes of play.

The Maroons had their chances in the first quarter, but Salisbury keeper Dan Korpon was up to the task, making five saves in the first period of action.

After Smith extended the Sea Gull lead out to 6-1 with his second tally of the contest, and one of four overall, the Maroons fought back to within four goals on an unassisted tally by Garrett Yaralian. The rest of the quarter belonged to Salisbury, with the visiting squad scoring the final six goals of the period to take a commanding 12-2 lead at the break. Senior Andy Murray, who was 9-for-16 on face-offs in the game, scored twice in the second period run, while Simmons scored for the second time.

The Maroons won the face-off to start off the second half of play, but a forced turnover by senior and All-American defender Eric Martin created the Sea Gulls^ 13 goal of the game. Martin earned an assist on the goal which was scored by Simmons. Roanoke^s Mike Chase scored on a bounce shot a little over a minute later to make the score 13-3, but the Sea Gulls scored five of the next six goals to own a 18-4 lead heading into the final period of play.

With Korpon on the bench and several SU reserves in the contest, the Maroons scored the lone four goals of the game to make the final score 18-8. Freshman Jon Mason scored twice for Roanoke in the fourth period of play.

Simmons finished the game with three goals and four assists, while Smith scored a game-high four goals. Korpon played the first 45 minutes of the game in goal, making nine saves and allowing four goals against. Bryan Bradford won eight of 11 face-offs for the Sea Gulls, which outshot Roanoke 46-26.

Davis finished with a goal and three assists for Roanoke, which also got two goals from Yaralian and one each from Chris Keating and Mark Lanzer. Matt Madalon faced 46 shots, allowing 18 goals and making 13 saves.
