| The Game Story: | |||||
| SALEM, VA-Tufts University senior Chris Connelly scored a man-up goal with 1:19 left in the game to give visiting Tufts University men’s lacrosse team a 13-12 win over host Roanoke on Tuesday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Jumbos, the nation’s 15th-ranked team, improve to 3-0 on the season. Roanoke, which entered the game ranked 18th in the nation, falls to 5-3 with its second consecutive loss. Tied at 12 with 1:35 left in the contest, the Maroons were called for a one-minute penalty. The Jumbos quickly took advantage, getting the game-winning goal 16 seconds later. Mark Warner fed a pass from behind the cage to Connelly, up top, who scored on a 15-yard shot, Tufts’ fifth man-up goal of the day. The Jumbos, who won just nine of the game’s 29 face-offs, won the ensuing face-off, however, and were able to run time off the clock. Roanoke forced two turnovers but each time failed on a clear attempt, the second with less than 10 seconds to play. Connelly’s goal capped a four-goal second half comeback for the Jumbos. The Maroons led 8-5 at halftime and went up 9-5 early in the second half on a Jon Mason tally. The Jumbos battled back and with 4:05 left in the third got a Clem McNally score off of a broken RC clear. That goal tied the game at nine. The Maroons closed the third period with a 10-9 lead after Pat March dodged from behind the cage and scored with 1:48 left. Mason then gave the Maroons a two-goal cushion with his fourth of the game, that to start the fourth. After McNally scored a man-up goal with 12:36 left, the Maroons took advantage of a failed TU clear, getting a score from Zach Thomas, that with 10:38 left to give the Maroons a 12-10 lead. Conner Ginsburg scored back-to-back goals midway through the fourth period to even the score at 12, setting up late game-winning, man-up tally from Connelly. In addition the five man-up goals, the Jumbos also got a short-handed goal, that from Mike Cortese in the second period, a goal that tied the game at five. Roanoke opens its 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference schedule on Saturday with a home game against the Generals of Washington & Lee University. The game in Salem begins at 2:00pm. Tufts also opens its conference schedule this coming weekend, traveling to #3 Wesleyan College. |
