The Game Story:
SALEM, VA--The Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team closed out its 2007 regular season with a 13-7 home victory over Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday in Salem, VA. The Maroon extend their winning streak to seven consecutive game and end the regular season with a 12-4 record. The Maroons also improve to 5-1 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and secure at least a tie for first place in the final ODAC standings. The Marlins fall to 9-5, 2-4.

The Maroons never trailed in the game. After Roanoke freshman goalie Jake Dorsey made three saves on Virginia Wesleyan’s first possession of the game, the Maroons went up 1-0 on a Jon Mason 15-yard shot, Roanoke’s first shot of the game. Leading 2-0, the Maroons went up 3-0 on a Pat March man-down goal. The team’s fourth goal came from Chaz Carlson to start the second.

Roanoke led 7-3 at the break after senior Scott Lindberg finished a cross-crease pass from Zach Thomas with just 17 seconds left in the second quarter. Roanoke’s lead did not get out to more than four goals until the final 10 minutes of the game. Virginia Wesleyan’s Brett Morris finished a shot on the crease to make the score 10-7 early in the fourth. Mason and March countered for the Maroons to make the score 12-7. With less than a minute to play and with the Marlins doubling the ball all over the field, Carlson fought his way through the VWC defenders and scored into an empty net to make the final 13-7.

Roanoke sophomore Josh Rea continued his stellar play on face-offs, winning 12 of his 14 attempts. He led all players with eight groundballs. During Roanoke’s current seven-game winning streak, Rea has won 76.4 percent of his face-offs. For the second consecutive game, Dorsey finished with a career-high 12 saves.

The Maroons will take over a week off before returning to action in the ODAC semifinals on May 2nd. The opponent, site, and time will be determined next week.
