The Game Story:
SALEM, Va. --- Roanoke built a 10-0 lead and never trailed in its 22-5 win over York (PA) in the season-opener at Kerr Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Maroons are now 1-0 on the season while the Spartans dropped to 0-1.

With a 33-10 all-time record in season-openers, Roanoke has won 10 of its last 11 dating back to 2000. The Maroons hold a 35-8 record in home-opening games. This marks the 10th time they have put up 20 or more goals in a season-opener, the last two coming against York.

The Maroons outshot the Spartans, 64-25, including a 21-4 advantage in the second period. Roanoke collected 44 groundballs to York’s 29 on the afternoon. RC was successful in 26-of-36 clear attempts, including all five extra man opportunities.
Roanoke won 21-of-31 face-offs, led by Justin Tuma (Bloomfield Hills, MI, Lahser), winning 11-of-13. It led to three goals and one assist for the pre-season All-American. Greg Khanzadian (Syracuse, NY, Christian Brothers)won 10-of-16 on the day and added an assist.

Matt Quinton (Elora, Ontario, Canada, Kitchener Braves)led all scorers with five goals and one assist. Trey Keeley (Lancaster, PA, Conestaga Valley High School)had three goals and two assists while freshman Richard Lachlan (Port Coquitlam, B.C., Terry Fox Secondary)tied Quinton with a game-best five goals. Ashton Hotchkiss (Darien, CT, Darien)finished with two goals and an assist.

Stephen Simmons (West Friendship, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)led the Maroons with 10 groundballs, followed by Jake Dorsey (Woodbine, MD, Mt. St. Joseph)with five. Dorsey finished with 14 saves in goal on the afternoon.

Ryan McNicholas led York with a goal and an assist. James Greenwood collected eight groundballs. Goalie Chris Collins had seven saves for the Spartans.
The Maroons return to action on Sunday, Feb. 21 as they host St. Mary’s College of Maryland at Kerr Stadium. Game time is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
