| The Game Story: | |||||
| LEXINGTON, VA--The Roanoke College men's lacrosse team scored the first 11 goals of the game in rolling to a 14-3 win over Elizabethtown College on Saturday evening in Lexington, VA. The Maroons, ranked in the top-15 in three Division III national polls, improve to 3-0 on the season. The Blue Jays fall to 0-2 on the year. Roanoke freshman Zack Thomas (Bel Air, MD/St. Paul's) opened the game's scoring, just 22 seconds into the contest. Senior Dan Reed (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) earned the first of his two assists on the goal. Just 29 seconds later sophomore Jon Mason (Orangeville, ONT, Canada/Orangeville) made the score 2-0 in Roanoke's favor, scoring on a Chris Keating (Chatham, NJ/Chatham) assist. Reed then scored two consecutive goals, just over a minute apart, to make the score 4-0 with 9:13 to play in the first. The second of the two was the eventual game-winner. Before the first quarter was up, freshman Billy Cameron (Salem, VA/Salem) netted a goal, and Reed notched his fourth point, and third goal, of the quarter. The Maroons extended their lead out to 10-0 at halftime, that after getting scores from Mason, Keating, Thomas, and Tug Schroeder (Cincinnati, OH/Sewickley). Schroeder also earned an assist in the second quarter. Heading into halftime, the Maroons owned a 25-18 lead in shots, but held the 10-0 lead thanks in large part to the play of junior goalie Matt Madalon (Darien, CT/Darien) who made 11 saves in the first 30 minutes of action, six in the first quarter, five in the second. The Maroons opened the second half scoring as well, extending their lead out to 11-0 on a Schroeder fastbreak goal, that by finishing a Josh Bryant (Dover, DE/Caeser Rodney) pass. The Blue Jays were finally able to get on the board with 4:01 left in the third quarter. Brian Ginter ended the EC scoring slump, scoring on a spinning shot from about 10 yards off the goal line. Trailing 13-1 heading into the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays outscored the Maroons 2-1 over the final 15 minutes of play. Rob Towe and Chris Harrison scored for Elizabethtown, while Nick Derby (Boston, MA/Proctor Academy) scored the first goal of his Roanoke career for the Maroons. In all, Madalon finished the game with 16 saves in 51:22, that while allowing just two goals. Reed finished the day with three goals and two assists, while Schroeder, Mason, Thomas, and Keating all had two for the Maroons. Elizabethtown starting keeper Fran McKeever played all but two minutes and made 11 saves while allowing all 14 goals. The Maroons will head to Orlando, FL for a Tuesday game against Roger Williams and a Wednesday contest against Ithaca College. The Maroons will then play at top-ranked Salisbury next Sunday in Salisbury, MD. |
