|BRISTOL, R.I.- Sophomore Drew Smith (Blue Point, N.Y.) registered a career-high seven points as the RWU Men’s Lacrosse team rolled to a 17-0 victory Tuesday over the visiting Amcats of Anna Maria College.|
Though the Hawks needed nearly 10 minutes to break the scoreless tie, RWU tallied five goals in the final 5:54 of the first quarter. After senior Joe Paratore (Deer Park, N.Y.) scored the eventual game winner, classmate Packy Markham (Cutchogue, N.Y.) scored at 4:28 before sophomore Jim Turenne (Bristol, R.I.) scored 16 seconds later. Back-to-back goals by senior Dave Hurley (Hanover, Mass.) put RWU ahead 5-0.
After another early-quarter draught, Hawks’ freshman Justin Leddy (Manasquan, N.J.) scored all three goals of the second frame beginning at 5:49 to give RWU the 8-0 halftime lead.
The offense continued in the third quarter as RWU scored nine goals to take the 17-0 lead heading into the fourth quarter, when the hosts remained scoreless, recording just one shot.
Anna Maria totaled eight shots in the contest, led by junior Nick Caponi (Leominster, Mass.) who registered five shots and seven ground balls. The Amcats freshman goalkeeper, Anthony DiTommaso (Ashby, Mass.) tallied seven saves in 60 minutes.
Hawks senior goalkeeper Matt Levy (St. Louis, Mo.) made three saves in 45 minutes, while sophomore Tom Hardon (Devon, Pa.) was not tested in the final 15 minutes.
The game marked the final contest in Anna Maria’s season, while RWU continues its regular season play, hosting Nichols College, Thursday at 4 p.m.
