Rpi vs. Elmira
March 21, 2009
The Game Story:
TROY, N.Y. Ė Junior Paul Cerone scored on a hard shot from the slot 2:23 into overtime Ė his fourth goal of the game Ė to give the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) menís lacrosse team an 11-10 come-from-behind win over Elmira College in a non-league game at Harkness Field.

Rensselaer controlled the ball off the opening draw of the extra period and got two shots off before Ceroneís (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) game-winning marker. RPI, which forced overtime by scoring with just seven seconds left in regulation, improves to 2-3 on the season. The Soaring Eagles fall to 1-4.

Trailing 10-9 with 19 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, the homestanding Red Hawks saw senior Josh Secora (Evergreen, CO/Golden) hit the cross bar on a bouncing shot. Elmira controlled the rebound but the whistle blew as the visitors were called for two unnecessary roughness penalties and RPI retained the ball with 13 seconds left. Rensselaer set up its offense and got the game-tying goal six seconds later when Conor Chocheles (Babylon, NY/Babylon) found a cutting Brett Evans (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford), who scored from close range.

The game was close throughout as neither team opened a lead larger than two goals and there were six ties. Cerone opened the scoring at 9:59 of the first quarter before Evans doubled RPIís lead just over a minute later. Elmira scored the next three goals, including a man-up goal by freshman Brandon Youngstrom (Vestal, NY/Vestal) for a 3-2 lead at 11:49 of the second quarter.

Cerone scored two unassisted goals in a row to put RPI back in front, 4-3, before the two teams alternated the final three goals of the first half and the score was tied, 5-5, at halftime.

Elmira built an 8-6 lead at 8:47 of the fourth quarter but RPIís Brian Larkin (Florham Park, NJ/Seton Hall Prep.) scored just six seconds later to pull the Red Hawks within one goal. The two teams traded the next four goals before Rensselaer Evans tied the game with his second of the afternoon.

In addition to Cerone and Evans, Chocheles also had multiple points for RPI, tallying a goal and two assists. Larkin won 13 of 19 faceoffs and picked up 10 ground balls and senior Ryan DeJordy (Albany, NY/Columbia) made seven saves for the win.

For Elmira, Youngstrom had two goals and two assists, as did sophomore Kenny Keirstead (Waltham, MA/Waltham). Senior Justin Rodis (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) added two goals and an assist for the Soaring Eagles, who got 11 saves from freshman Ryan Miller (Fairport, NY/Kiski School).

Rensselaer is back in action on Wednesday when it kicks off its Liberty League schedule with a home game against Vassar College at 4pm. Elmira travels to St. John Fisher for its Empire 8 opener on Wednesday at 4pm.
