The Game Story:
TROY, N.Y. – Six different players scored, including three with multiple goals, to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s lacrosse team to a 9-5 Liberty League victory over Hamilton College on Saturday. The Red Hawks, who are now 2-0 in conference play, improve to 4-3 on the season. The Continentals are now 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the Liberty League.

Hamilton jumped out to the early lead on a tally by senior Andy Simon (Princeton, NJ/Peddie School) less than two minutes into the contest. The Red Hawks responded with 11:02 remaining in the first quarter on sophomore Nick Billy’s (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) third tally of the season.

RPI continued to press into the second stanza, taking a 3-1 lead by the 6:14 mark. Junior Paul Cerone (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) added his team-leading 11th tally of the season off a point-blank pass from senior Josh Secora (Evergreen, CO/Golden). Rookie Austin Ray (Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) made it a two-goal advantage with 6:14 remaining and back-and-forth goals sent the home team into halftime with a 4-2 advantage.

Momentum continued to swing in Rensselaer’s favor to start the third quarter as Cerone and Secora each tallied to make it a 6-2 advantage with 6:19 on the clock. The Continentals once again found their way into the offensive zone as senior Austin Deyo (DeWitt, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) scored with four minutes left in the stanza to make it a three-goal lead (6-3) for the Red Hawks.

The final period saw RPI push its lead to five (8-3) with 12:21 remaining as senior Ryan Bigham (Newington, CT/Newington) and Billy scored within thirty seconds of one another to pace the action.

Hamilton’s Franke Holiber (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) pulled the visitors back to within four after corralling a pass from freshman Jon Leanos (Long Valley, NJ/Delbarton School) at 9:40, but RPI once again found its way to the scoreboard, holding the Continentals to just one more tally for the final margin.

In addition to Secora, who had two goals and an assist, the Red Hawks saw Cerone and Billy each add two tallies. Bigham had a goal and two assists while sophomore Taylor Inman (Sugar Land, TX/Strake Jesuit College Prep) had a goal and an assist.
