February 23, 2013
The Game Story:
Troy, NY - Sophomore Michael Schreck's goal with six seconds left in overtime gave the Montclair State men's lacrosse team a 10-9 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at East Campus Stadium.

Schreck (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) collected a pass from classmate Jevic (Voorhees, NJ, Eastern Regional) while cutting to the cage and scored his second of the game to help the Red Hawks improve to 2-0. RPI falls to 0-1. The goal was Schreck's second of the game.

RPI opened the game with the first two goals, both coming within 1:09 of each other, but Montclair tied the score at 2-2 just 16 seconds into the second quarter. The Engineers countered with the next two markers, including a man-up goal by senior David Hey (Chapel Hill, NC / Durham Academy), for a 4-2 lead at 11:42 of the second.

The two teams traded single goals before the Red Hawks, off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2009, scored the final three of the half for a 6-5 edge at the break. Kenneth Bogert (Brick, NJ, Brick Township) scored at 7:09, Joel Van Der Wal (Columbia, NJ, North Warren) at 4:39 and Bogert again, this time with just 39 seconds left. All three goals were unassisted.

Montclair increased its lead to three goals at the start of the second half, including a goal at 13:55 on an outstanding individual effort by Sam Morrissey (Hackettstown, NJ, West Morris Central). The junior attack was able to flip a shot into the net from close range despite having Rensselaer defenders draped all over him.

RPI pulled to within one goal, 8-7, by answering with a Patrick Finn (North Easton, MA / Thayer Academy) a minute after the Red Hawks scored and a Brett Overend (Laguna Hills, CA / Laguna Hills) marker within a minute of Finn's goal. The goals were the second of the game for both Finn and Overand.

After Jevic gave the visitors a 9-7 lead, RPI scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter when Wes Rudy (Doylestown, PA / The Hill School) scored his second of the game at 11:31 and Eric Valero (Princeton Junction, NJ / W. Windsor Plainsboro) his first at 5:41.

Junior Michael Dorn (Blairstown, NJ, North Warren) made 12 saves for the win, while senior James Manchester (Niskayuna, NY / Niskayuna) took the loss. He had two saves on six shots in 33:54 of relief.

The Red Hawks are now off until Saturday, March 2 when they host eighth-ranked Dickinson College at Sprague Field at 3:00 pm.
