March 26, 2008
The Game Story:
TROY, N.Y. – Senior PJ McComb (Newington, CT/Newington) tallied two goals and added three assists to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s lacrosse team to a 9-5 win over Potsdam State in non-conference action this afternoon. With their sixth consecutive victory, the Red Hawks improve to 6-1 overall. The Bears fall to 2-2.

It was a back-and-forth battle through the opening quarter which saw the homestanding Red Hawks strike first on a tally by senior midfield Mike Sampson (Columbus, OH/Upper Arlington) at 14:12. The Bears wasted little time in evening things up as freshman Dustin Dunn (Peterborough, ON/St. Peter’s Seconday) connected at the 12:40 mark.

Tied 3-3 entering the second stanza, Rensselaer grabbed a one-goal lead on a twisting shot by senior Tom O’Dwyer (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville). McComb, who scored the Red Hawks third goal, led all scorers with a tally and three assists in the opening half.

Potsdam State rallied back to open the third quarter, tying the game at 4-4 on a goal by sophomore Zac McIlmoyle (Peterborough, ON/Berkshire School) at 13:24. RPI answered just minutes later as senior Alex MacDiarmid (New Hartford, NY/New Hartford) scored at 11:46.

The Red Hawks rattled off four more goals from that point to take a 9-4 lead with just 44 seconds remaining in the contest. The Bears added a final tally off the stick of sophomore Kyle Phelix (North Lawrence, NY/St. Lawrence Central) but it would not be enough.

In addition to McComb, RPI saw Sampson post two goals. O’Dwyer added two tallies as well while MacDiarmid, freshman Nick Billy (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) and junior Josh Secora (Golden, CO/Evergreen) had a goal apiece. Sophomore netminder Ryan DeJordy (Albany, NY/Columbia) improved his personal record to 5-1, stopping four shots in the win.

For Potsdam State, McIlmoyle led all scorers with three goals. Dunn and Phelix each added a tally. In goal, sophomore Billy Richards (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) shouldered the loss, making 11 saves.

RPI returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Liberty League and area-rival Union College at Harkness Field (1pm). Potsdam is also in action on Saturday when it travels to Geneva to face Keuka College (2:30pm).
