Rpi vs. Union
April 29, 2006
The Game Story:
TROY, N.Y. – Behind four goals from senior midfielder Chris Sherman (Newark, DE/St. Marks), the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) men’s lacrosse team defeated area-rival Union, 12-5, and clinched the #2 seed in next week’s Liberty League playoffs.

The Red Hawks improve to 6-9 overall and 4-2 in the league. Although tied for second place in the standings with Hamilton, RPI earns the second seed in the playoffs thanks to an 11-10 overtime victory on April 1 against the Continentals. The Dutchmen fall to 4-10 on the season with a 2-4 Liberty League mark and are eliminated from post-season play with the loss.

Freshman Ryan Bigham (Newton, CT/Trinity Pawling) got the offense going for RPI in the first quarter, with the first of his three goals on the afternoon at the 9:01 mark. The Dutchmen broke through in the second period, when senior Dan Myerow (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) scored past Red Hawks goalie John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/Bethlehem) to make it 3-1. RPI would take a 4-2 lead into the halftime, setting the stage for Rensselaer’s offensive flurry in the final two periods.

Sherman was the story in the third quarter, tallying three consecutive goals, including an astounding goal with 1:50 remaining in the frame. Rushing in on Union’s Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan), Sherman cut toward the left side of the net and got the ball over the head of the goalie, into the right corner of the net to give the Red Hawks a commanding 8-3 lead heading into the final quarter.

Despite two goals in the final stanza for Union, the RPI offense prevailed, tacking on four more goals, including markers from senior Adam LoGiudice (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa) and sophomore #Tom O’Dwyer# (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) en route to the 12-5 win.

In addition to Sherman and Bigham, who also added an assist, RPI got two goals from freshman Josh Secora (Evergreen, CO/Golden) and a goal and two assists from sophomore PJ McComb (Newington, CT/Newington). Thibdeau finished with 13 saves to pick up his first victory of the season and senior Nick Gaetanos (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) stopped two shots in relief.

The Dutchmen got a goal and two assists from sophomore Tom Simmons (Salisbury, CT/Salisbury). Classmate Jonathan Miller (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) and freshmen Matthew Douglas (New York, NY/Hotchkiss School) and Kevin Rautenstrauch (West Seneca, NY/St. Francis Prep) added a goal apiece while Oram made 18 saves in the loss for Union.

The Red Hawks, who honored seniors Matt Curtis, Jon Ellement, Nick Gaetanos, Adam LoGiudice, Brandon Recchia and Chris Sherman in a pre-game ceremony, return to action on Friday when they host #3 Hamilton in the Liberty League playoffs at Harkness Field at a time to be determined early next week.
