|Salisbury, Md - Senior midfielder Mike Roberts scored his only goal of the game
on an assist from freshman Chris Phillips with 2:12 remaining to lift Salisbury
to a 10-9 win over Adelphi in a non-conference clash of ranked teams.
Salisbury, ranked #9 in Division III, improves to 9-2 with its fourth straight
win. Adelphi, the defending Division II national champion and currently ranked
fourth, falls to 5-2.
Salisbury never trailed in a game that featured five tie scores, including
three in the final quarter. The Sea Gulls led 5-3 at halftime and claimed their
largest lead of the game at 6-3 when Phillips scored at 9:06 of the third
quarter. Adelphi answered with three of the next four goals to pull to within
7-6 at the end of the quarter.
Adelphi's Tyler Heavenor tallied his third goal of the day at 10:30 of the
fourth quarter to knot the score at 7-7. Scott Simmons then pushed Salisbury
ahead 8-7 at 9:16 before Ryan Clauss answered for the Panthers at 8:31. Simmons
scored his second at 7:16, pushing SU ahead 9-8. Adelphi's Joe Droge tied the
score for the last time with an unassisted goal at 3:28.
Simmons and Chris Lauer finished with two goals each to lead Salisbury, which
improved to 8-0 all-time against Adelphi. Heavenor led the Panthers with three
goals while Droge finished with two goals and one assist.
Salisbury outshot Adelphi 44-18, with Panther goalie Mark Miller registering 18
saves to keep his team close. The Sea Gulls also controlled 19 of 22 face-offs,
including a 17-2 individual performance by SU sophomore Andy Murray.
