| Salisbury, Md - Salisbury built an 8-1 halftime lead en route to a 12-5 victory
over Goucher at home in the semifinal round of the Capital Athletic Conference
Tournament Thursday. The top-seed Sea Gulls (13-1 overall) will host #2 seed
Mary Washington in Sunday's championship game, with the winner to receive the
CAC's automatic bid to next month's NCAA Championship Tournament.
Seniors Chris Lauer, Josh Bergey, and junior Andy Arnold each scored three goals apiece to pace #2 ranked Salisbury. Lauer registered all three of his goals in the first quarter as the Gulls built a 5-1 lead. Bergey's first of the day, Arnold's second and Ryan Rohde's only marker pushed the lead to 8-1 at halftime. The lead grew to 9-1 on Bergey's goal at 12:41 of the third quarter before Goucher (8-8 overall) rallied with four straight goals overlapping the third and fourth quarters to pull to within 9-5. Freshman midfielder Binz Hansen fueled the run with two goals. Salisbury then sealed the victory with three goals over the final 4:21, including Bergey's and Arnold's third of the day and Andy Murray's extra-man tally with 56 seconds remaining. Both goalies registered season-highs in saves, with Goucher sophomore Reeves Craig stopping 20 shots and Salisbury sophomore Dan Korpon making 14 saves. Salisbury finished with a 49-26 edge in total shots and won 12 of 19 faceoffs. Murray controlled 11 of his 16 draws. Senior Rich Bayly registered all seven GC faceoff wins and tied the school-record with 152 wins on the season. |
