The Game Story:
NEWPORT, R.I. - Sophomore Brandon Rooney (West Newton, Mass.) and freshman Chris Walker (Marshfield, Mass.) each scored three goals to lift the Salve Regina University men's lacrosse team to an 8-4 win over the University of New England in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC) action Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Field.

Senior Ryan Doherty (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Blair Kelley (Lee, N.H.) also scored for the Seahawks, who stretched their win streak to eight games and improved to 9-1 (5-0 TCCC) on the season. Senior Dan Leyden (Northfield, Mass.) potted three goals for the Nor'easters, who fell to 4-3 (1-2 TCCC).

"I thought our offense did a good job getting shots, and their goalie deserves a lot of credit. He made some good saves," said Salve Regina head coach Patrick Cooney. "The UNE team is very improved and brought a lot of energy defensively. It was a good game and great for the spectators. (Senior goalie) Brian Walker (Marshfield, Mass.) played another outstanding game in goal for us. He really helped us set up our transition game and with our clears. We're really happy with where we're progressing."

Doherty's fifth goal of the season with the man advantage at 10:54 of the first quarter gave the Seahawks a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, Leyden's 16th of the season at 9:05 tied the score at one. Rooney netted his 30th of the season with 2:52 remaining in the first to give Salve Regina a 2-1 lead, and his 31st with 37 seconds remaining pushed the lead to 3-1 at the end of 15 minutes of play.

Leyden scored the only goal of the second period at 9:54 to bring UNE to within one at 3-2 entering halftime. The Seahawks answered with three third-quarter goals - one by Rooney at 12:18, one by Walker at 11:58, and Kelley's first of the season with the man advantage at 9:33 - to give the Seahawks a 6-2 lead. Leyden's third goal of the contest at 8:52 cut the lead to three at 6-3, but goals by Walker at 1:02 of the third quarter and 10:37 of the fourth quarter put the Seahawks back in the drivers' seat. Sophomore Michael Woods (Kittery Point, Maine) closed the scoring with his ninth of the season for UNE at 5:45.

Walker finished the afternoon with 14 saves, lowering his goals against average from 6.87 to 6.57 in the process. Freshman Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) stopped 20 Seahawk shots. Salve Regina outshot UNE 54-25 on the afternoon while the Nor'easters won 12 of 16 face-offs.
