|Salve Regina wins second straight with 9-7 victory over Southern Maine
NEWPORT, Rhode Island -- Salve Regina University senior attack Tim Ryan [Barrington, Rhode Island] scored three goals and added two assists as he led the Seahawks to a 9-7 victory over visiting University of Southern Maine in non-league men’s lacrosse action.
“It was a good win against a good team,” said Seahawk coach Kevin Meany. “Defense played very well. Ryan Cornelius has been playing outstanding long-stick midfield for us the last two games.”
Cornelius [Deer Park, New York] has contributed 15 ground balls in the last two games.
The Huskies had a 3-2 edge after the first quarter on a pair of goals from Paul Dubiel [Billerica, Massachusetts] sandwiched around a tally from Dan Soule [South Portland, Maine]. Dubiel led the Huskies with three goals.
Salve Regina enjoyed its most productive offensive output in the second quarter. Ryan capped off the scoring in the period with the 100th point of his career.
Southern Maine (2-1) freshman goalie Jeff Lamoreux [Walpole, Massachusetts] kept his team close with 10 saves. Salve Regina (2-1) goalie Bob Gilmore [Norfolk, Massachusetts] made eight saves in his second straight victorious decision. It was the first time in the history of the program (now in its seventh season) that Salve Regina has posted back-to-back victories.
