The Game Story:
SCRANTON, Pa.—The University of Scranton trailed by only one goal after the first period of play, but sixth-ranked Ithaca put it into another gear the rest of the way and cruised to a 22-6 victory in the season-opener for both teams Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

Junior attacker Sean Thomson (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) led the Bombers, now 1-0, with six goals and two assists and Brian Weil (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst), Brett Huckle (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and Jeff Slack Massena, N.Y./Bridgton Academy) added three apiece as Ithaca took advantage of a 27-5 edge in face-offs to keep the Royals, now 0-1, on the defensive side of the field throughout the afternoon. Ithaca out-shot Scranton by a 55-37 margin.

Scranton took a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman Edward Boate (Media, Pa./Penncrest) with 13:35 remaining in the first period before the Bombers ran off string of four straight goals. The Royals cut the gap to 4-3 on the first of two goals by Sean O’Connor (Media, Pa./Penncrest) and the first of two by Todd Cuccia (Larchmont, N.Y./Iona Prep) before Huckle answered with an unassisted goal with 4:47 left. Cuccia made it 5-4 at the end of the first period with an unassisted goal with 2:02 remaining.

Ithaca dominated the second period, as Thomson and Weil scored three time as the Bombers scored 10 times to take a 15-4 lead by intermission. Freshman Thomas Davis (Media, Pa./Penncrest) made a game-high 17 saves in goal for the Royals while freshman Dennis Butler (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville) replaced starter Andrew Eisen (Rockaway, N.Y./Midwood) in the second period and finished with nine saves for the Bombers. Scranton will return to action on Tuesday, March 9, against the Hawks of Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
