| Saratoga Springs, N.Y.--Charlie McNeil scored four goals and Tom Spinella added three goals and an assist to lead the Skidmore College men~Rs lacrosse team to 12-5 win over Clarkson University and the program~Rs first Liberty League title. The win was a program record 11th for the Thoroughbreds, who finish with a perfect 6-0 mark in Liberty League play. Skidmore (11-2) will host either St. Lawrence or Union on Friday at 4 p.m. in the Liberty League semifinals. The opponent is dependant on Saturday night~Rs Union-RPI contest. The win was also the 200th career win for Thoroughbred coach Terry Corcoran. Corcoran, in his ninth season at Skidmore, has compiled a 200-130 record in 22 seasons as a head coach. Brendan Bellefeuille gave Skidmore a 1-0 lead at the 12:00 mark of the first quarter. McNeil scored his first goal with 3:42 to play in the quarter. Clarkson~Rs Jon Parks found the net with 2:26 to play, but McNeil answered back 39 seconds later to make it 3-1. The Thoroughbreds scored the next five goals for an 8-1 lead before Brian Hanlon scored on a man-up goal with 11:59 to play in the third. Rich Burritt cut the lead to five (8-3) at the 8:00 mark , but Skidmore shut the door with four straight for a 12-3 lead. The Golden Knights scored a pair in the final 90 seconds for the 12-5 final. Skidmore~Rs defense, ranked second nationally, held a conference opponent under seven goals for the fifth time in six games. James deGorter had 10 saves and five ground balls for the Thoroughbreds. Joe Zebrowski had 11 saves for Clarkson (4-2 Liberty, 7-6 overall). |
