Skidmore vs. Nazareth

The Game Story:
SARATOGA, N.Y. (March 28, 2003) -- Thirteenth-ranked Nazareth carried a six-goal lead into the game's final eight minutes Friday, then watched that lead nearly evaporate over a scary three-minute stretch, but the Golden Flyers held on for a 16-15 victory over host Skidmore in men's lacrosse.

With the score tied 5-5 early in the second quarter, Nazareth strung together seven of the next eight goals to take a seemingly safe 12-6 lead. The teams exchanged goals to open the fourth quarter and the Golden Flyers (3-2 overall) were comfortably ahead, 15-9, after a goal by Brian Navarra with 7:52 left.

Skidmore, however, reeled off five straight goals, including two by Mike Rockefeller, to close within 15-14 with more than four minutes to play. Dave Graham broke the string for Nazareth with a goal with 1:49 left, but Skidmore (4-3 overall) drew within one again when Brendan Bellefeuille scored with :48 to play.

Sophomore attackman Chris Balash spearheaded the Golden Flyers' offense with a career-best seven points on five goals and two assists. Four of his goals came in the first quarter. Sophomore Bryan Coon added four goals and freshman midfielder Bryan Adams delivered two goals and one assist. Rockefeller had four goals for Skidmore, Bellefeuille three.

Nazareth returns home to host Cortland in a non-league game Wednesday at 4 p.m.
