Skidmore vs. Rpi
April 1, 2009
The Game Story:
Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- Tyler Inman (Sugar Land, Texas) scored 1:07 into overtime to give Rensselaer a 5-4 Liberty League men's lacrosse win over Skidmore College, Wednesday at Wachenheim Field.

The Thoroughbreds fall to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in Liberty play, while the Red Hawks have won four straight to improve to 5-3 and 3-0.

Skidmore took a quick 2-0 lead in the first quarter on Jacques Ward's (New York, N.Y./Governors Acad.) goal at 13:48 and Nick Coppola's (Basking Ridge, N.J.) 11th goal of the season at 12:46. Nick Billy (Redding, Conn.) got one back for RPI at 6:21. The Thoroughbreds closed the quarter when Tom Levesque (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) fed Rob Lutin (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber) for his 18th goal of the season with :44 to play to make it 3-1.

Levesque opened the second quarter with his sixth goal of the season at 12:08 for a 4-1 Skidmore lead. It would be the final goal of the game for the Thoroughbreds. RPI was content to patiently control the ball on offense for most of the quarter, until Paul Cerone (Ridgefield, Conn.) broke free to score a wrap-around goal with 1:34 to play in the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Cerone made it 4-3 with 4:34 to play in regulation. Andrew Miller (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) tied it from Billy with 2:37 left. Both teams had chances in the final minutes, but Skidmore goalie Flip Bongaerts and Red Hawk stopper Ryan DeJordy (Albany, N.Y./Columbia) each came up with big plays to send the game to overtime.

Brian Larkin (Florham Park, N.J.) won the overtime face off to give RPI possession. After working the ball around, Billy got the ball to Inman who was able to connect from about 15 yards out for the winner.

Bongaerts finished with 12 saves and five ground balls. DeJordy had five saves, all in the second half.

For Skidmore, Levesque had a goal and two assists. Scott Grillo (Wellesley, Mass.) had two ground balls and three caused turnovers and Cory Barkoff (Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) had six ground balls.

Billy led the Red Hawks with a goal and two assists. Larkin won eight of 13 face offs and had five ground balls.
