Skidmore vs. Saint Lawrence

The Game Story:
Saratoga Springs, N.Y.-- The Skidmore College men’s lacrosse lacrosse team held off a furious fourth quarter St. Lawrence rally for a 10-9 win over the defending Liberty champions.

The win snaps SLU's 32-game league win streak that dates back to a 2005 Skidmore win over the Saints in the Liberty League playoffs.

The Thoroughbreds improve to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in Liberty League play, while the Saints fall to 4-3 and 0-1.

Skidmore shut SLU down in the first half, scoring four in the first quarter and one in the second to take a 5-0 lead into the break.Rob Lutin (Port Washington, N.Y./Schreiber) scored twice, while Cory Barkoff(Woodbury, N.Y./Syosset) had a goal and two assists. Bryan Connolly (Babylon, N.Y./Babylon) and Sam Dickey(Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) also scored during the run.

The Saints came out strong in the second, quickly cutting the lead to 5-2 on goals by CP Rahe at 14:13 and Dave Schoettler at 11:42. Schoettler’s goal would be one of three second-half man-up goals for St. Lawrence.

The Thoroughbreds responded with goals byMike Holden (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) at 6:31 and Matt Levesque (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) at 5:44 to make up the lead back to five, 7-2. The Saints used man-up goals by Schoettler and Caldwell Rohrbach to get back to within three, 7-4 at the end of the third quarter. Schoettler’s goal came on a two-man advantage.

Ryan Paradis won the fourth quarter faceoff for Skidmore, with Barkoff picking-up the ground ball and then hitting an open Levesque in front, who converted for an 8-4 lead. The teams traded goals with Rohrbach scoring for SLU at 13:57 and Connolly scoring at 12:58 for the Thoroughbreds.

Skidmore then killed off another two-man St. Lawrence advantage, but Rohrbach assisted on consecutive Kyle Jacobsen goals at 10:24 and 8:26 to make it a two-goal game, 9-7.

Connolly gave the Thoroughbreds some breathing room at 4:54 with his third goal of the game, for a 10-7 lead.

Skidmore’s defense managed to hold the Saints off until Scott Smith got loose and scored from the right side to make it 10-8 with :54 left.

SLU won the ensuing faceoff, but CP Rahe’s shot was blocked and Skidmore goalie Flip Bongaertscame-up with the loose ball. After a Skidmore time out, Saint defender Trevor Scoon intercepted the Thoroughbed clearing pass and quickly found the open net with :32 left to make it 10-9.

The Saints won the faceoff on a procedure call, but Bongaerts stopped a Scott Smith shot with 16 seconds left to preserve the win. The Saints managed a final shot that sailed over the cage in the final seconds.

Connolly finished with a career-high three goals. Lutin and Levesque had two each, while Barkoff had a goal and four assists. DefensemanScott Grillo had a game-high seven groundballs and one caused turnover. Paradis won 16 of 21 faceoffs and defenseman Michael Jennings added three groundballs and three caused turnovers. Bongaerts had 16 saves.

Rohrbach finished with two goals and two assists for the Saints. Jacobsen and Schoettler had two goals each. Defender Greg Sperrazza had five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Saint goalie Andrew Cochran had 11 saves and five groundballs.

St. Lawrence had a 42-38 shot advantage, including an 18-10 edge in the fourth quarter. The Saints went 3 of 8 on extra-man opportunities, while Skidmore was 0 for 2.

The Thoroughbreds are at Middlebury on April 13.
