|Springfield, Mass. - April 11, 2009 - The Springfield College menís lacrosse team erupted for eight first quarter goals as it handled visiting Mass. Maritimie 23-5, in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League contest on a rainy Saturday afternoon on Stagg Field.|
With its third-straight win, the Pride improves to 6-4 overall, including a 4-0 mark in league play. The loss drops the Buccaneers to 4-5, 0-3 this season.
Springfield dominated the game from the opening whistle as it held a 61-20 advantage in shots and had 59 ground balls compared to the visitors' 32. Springfield also controlled the face-off "X", going 20-for-30 in the contest.
Once again, Jake Beebe cemented himself in the record books as one of the top players in program history as he became just the 10th player at Springfield to record 200 career points and 100 career assists, accomplishing both feats in today's game. Beebe's 200th career point came on an assist to Jake Jones with 8:29 left in the first quarter.
Jones put the Pride on the board just 48 seconds into the contest after he dodged to his left and buried a bounce shot. Just 27 seconds later, Joe Heney converted a feed from Jarrid Johnson in transistion to give SC a two-goal advantage. The Pride continued to pour on the early pressure as Kyle Louer sliced through the Buccaneer defense 28 seconds later for Springfieldís third tally. Springfield then used a man-up strike from Chris Jez with 12:14 on the clock to gain a 4-0 lead.
A turning point in the game came after the Bucs' John Hermanís goal was called back after it was decided that he had an illegal stick. Facing a non-releasable penalty for the next three minutes, the Pride pounced all over the visitors. After burying three man up goals, including two from Jones, SC owned a 7-0 lead. Another Heney tally with just over four minutes remaining gave SC an 8-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.
Outshooting MMA 19-1 in the second quarter, Springfield scored another eight goals in the period as it finished with 16 in the opening half. An impressive stretch of three goals in just 35 seconds, including a pair of goals from Beebe, gave Springfield a 13-0 advantage. Brian Burke finally scored the Bucs lone goal of the first half as he finished a strike with six minutes on the clock.
With the game clearly in hand, head coach Keith Bugbee turned to the bench in the second half. Pat Fanning was especially impressive for Springfield as the freshman netted three goals in the second stanza.
Burke finished with two goals for Mass. Maritime, while the duo of Alex Deveaux and James Hitchings combined to make 13 saves in goal.
Springfield played four goalies in the game, with starter Tom Albano notching the win in just over 19 minutes of play. Albano needed to make just three saves in goal. Jez finished 8-for-11 on face-offs and picked up six ground balls in the contest. Beebe led all scorers with seven points, including five assists, while Louer pumped in three goals and added a pair of helpers. Some 18 different players for Springfield recorded at least one point in the victory.
The Pride returns to action when it takes a break from Pilgrim League action to take on Amherst at 7:00 pm on April 15.
