defeated 19th-ranked Springfield, 12-8, today at Fairfield University. The
Shoremen improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Pride slipped to 0-1 with
The Shoremen jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Senior midfielder Stephen Berger (Columbia, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) scored off a feed from senior midfielder Michael Dyal (West Palm Beach, FL/Hotchkiss School, CT) just 38 seconds into the game. Berger then assisted on a goal by freshman midfielder Jason Hull (West Hartford, CT/Avon Old Farms) with 9:41 left in the first quarter. That goal was the first of Hull's collegiate career. Junior attackman Jon Spivey (Timonium, MD/Dulaney) followed with a goal off a Dyal feed with 7:46 on the clock. Sophomore attackman Sam Lane (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield) and Berger each tacked on an unassisted goal with 3:59 and 1:09 to play in the quarter, respectively. Springfield finally got on the board when Lars Keil scored off an assist from Taylor Brown with three seconds left in the period.
The Shoremen opened the second-quarter scoring when Berger fired in a goal off a Spivey assist at 11:34. The Pride answered 24 seconds later when Keil again scored off a Brown assist to make it 6-2. Washington scored the next two goals as senior midfielder Brent Renner (Fairfax, VA/W.T. Woodson) found Spivey for a goal at 7:46 and Dyal scored off a Berger feed with 5:22 to play to push the lead to 8-2. The Pride got back within four by halftime, however, as Brown and Craig Gibson scored unassisted goals with 1:20 and 27 seconds left, respectively, to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Renner opened the third quarter with a goal with 11:07 left, but Gibson answered off a feed from Brown with 9:18 remaining in the quarter. Lane then scored off a Renner assist with 7:25 to go in the period to make it 10-5, but Gibson scored two goals, one off a Paul Purdy feed with 4:45 on the clock and the other off an assist from Brown with 46 seconds showing, to trim the lead to 10-7 after three periods.
Washington pushed the lead back to four early in the fourth quarter as Dyal scored with 12:03 to play. Neither team would score again until the 4:26 mark when Gibson scored off a Purdy assist to make it 11-8. The Shoremen closed out the scoring with 3:20 left when Spivey scored off an assist from freshman attackman Andrew Ostrusky (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park/Bridgton, ME).
Berger led the Shoremen offense with three goals and two assists, while Spivey added three goals and one assists and Dyal tallied two goals and two assists. Gibson finished with a game-high five goals for the Pride, while Brown contributed one goal and a game-high four assists.
Yost's 18 saves helped offset a 41-35 advantage in shots for Springfield. Washington won 15-of-23 faceoffs in the game; senior long-stick midfielder Tom Parr (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) led that effort with an 11-of-15 performance at the X.
The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. home game against eighth-ranked Ohio Wesleyan.
