SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 1, 2004 Springfield College senior attackman Paul Purdy (Brewster, N.Y.) tallied two goals and four assists to lead the No. 9 Pride to a 12-11 win over Western New England College in the championship game of the Pilgrim League Tournament this afternoon on Benedum Field. The win earns Springfield its second-straight league championship, and its fourth in the last five years, as well as an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

This was the fourth-consecutive season that Springfield faced Western New England in the Pilgrim League Tournament, including the third-straight time the teams have faced off in the championship game.

Purdy became the eighth player in school history to score 200 career points. He currently has 202 (119 goals, 83 assits) in four years at Springfield, which is unbeaten in its last 12 games.

WNEC (11-7) got on the board first with goals by junior attackman C.J. Annunciata (Waltham, Mass.) at 12:47 and senior attackman Marco Le Gette (Severna Park, Md.) to take a 2-0 lead with 10:16 remaining in the first quarter. The Pride bounced back with three unanswered goals by senior midfielder Mark Maitland (Salem, Mass.) at the 7:46 mark, Purdy at 6:36, and junior midfielder Derek Pedrick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) to lead, 3-2, with 6:01 to play in the first quarter. Tallies by WNEC junior midfielder Patrick Matthews (Middle Island, N.Y.) at 4:44, and SC junior midfield Kevin Warnock (Somers, Conn.) at 3:49, made the score, 4-3, after the first quarter of play.

After a goal by SC senior midfielder Craig Gibson (South Salem, N.Y.) at 14:12 of the second quarter, three-straight Golden Bear goals, including two by Matthews, put WNEC in the lead, 6-5, with 6:08 to play in the first half. The Pride answered with two goals by Purdy and Maitland in an 11-second span to reclaim the lead with 1:25 on the clock for the 7-6 halftime score.

A goal by Gibson at the 12:03 mark, assisted by Purdy's 200th career point, put SC up by two, 8-6, but back-to-back goals by WNEC freshman attackman Adam Cherry (Westfield, Mass.) only 55 seconds apart, tied the score, 8-8, with 6:35 remaining in the third quarter. A three-goal run by the Pride on goals by junior midfielder Adam Cost (Camilus, N.Y.) at 1:31, sophomore attackman Taylor Brown (Portsmouth, R.I.) at 1:19, and senior attackman Lars Keil (Andover, Mass.) put SC ahead for good, 11-8, with 31 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Golden Bear goals by freshman attackman Rob Ostrem (West Islip, N.Y.) at 10:07, and Le Gette at 6:49, made it a one-goal game, but a Pride tally by sophomore midfielder Brandon Asplundh (Bryn Athyn, Pa.) put SC back up by a pair, 12-10, with 5:41 remaining in the game. Annunciata's second goal of the game with two seconds on the clock made the final score, 12-11.
