|Springfield, Mass. – April 17, 2010 -- Joe Macchi netted four goals and added a pair of assists to lead the Springfield College men's lacrosse team to a 12-6 victory over rival Wheaton College in Pilgrim Lacrosse League action on Saturday afternoon.|
The Pride has now rattled off five straight victories to improve to 7-4 overall, 4-0 in conference action. The Lyons' record evens at 4-4, 2-1 in league play.
The game featured the only two teams with undefeated conference records entering the game, and served as a rematch of the past two conference tournament championship games.
Springfield held a 57-22 advantage in shots and owned a 48-23 edge in ground balls. Led by Mark Eaton, Springfield controlled the face-off "X" all day, winning 14-of-22 draws.
Springfield opened up the scoring 2:04 into the contest as Kyle Gable bounced home a shot into the back of the cage. Macchi tacked on the Pride’s second goal of the quarter as he dodged towards the middle and ripped a jump shot with 5:56 left on the clock.
Billy McNamara netted Wheaton’s first goal of the game at the 2:13 mark as he flicked a loose ball off the ground into the back of the cage to make it a 2-1 contest.
SC added two goals in the final 21 seconds of the opening quarter to own a 4-1 lead. Macchi registered his second goal of the frame before Eaton won the ensuing face off and hit trailer Shawn Runyon for a strike with four seconds remaining.
Springfield opened up the second quarter with three consecutive goals from Kyle Louer, Joe Heney, and Austin Orsini to own a 7-1 advantage. Wheaton’s Drew Schaffer scored the visitors' first goal in nearly 14 minutes as he buried a man-up goal into the top shelf with 3:18 left in the first half.
Macchi and Warren Garceau traded goals to start the second half before Macchi and Delia each pumped home unassisted goals to give Springfield a seven-goal cushion with 1:37 left in the third. On the ensuing face-off, Springfield was called for a hold and the Lyons made them pay with a Charlie Willauer goal just eight seconds later.
Springfield scored two goals in the opening 2:02 of the final quarter as Heney and Orsini found the back of the cage, as the Pride's lead ballooned to 12-4. The Lyons closed out the scoring in the game with a pair of man-up goals from Schaffer and Chris Landers to make it a 12-6 contest.
Macchi led all scorers with six points off four goals and two assists, while Orsini added two goals and an assist. Heney added two goals and Gable chipped in with a goal and an assist. Eaton won 13-of-21 from the "X", and Mike Delia picked up a game-high nine ground balls. Mike Smith spearheaded a spirited defensive effort as he caused five turnovers and helped limit the powerful Wheaton attack.
Landers led Wheaton with a goal and two assists, while Schaffer registered a pair of man-up goals. Phil Chapman led the Lyons with four ground balls.
Marc Martinez recorded the win as he made five saves while allowing five goals. His counterpart, Schuyler Horn, posted 16 saves as he shouldered the loss.
Springfield will resume conference play on Wednesday evening when it travels to square off against Clark at 7:00 pm.
