|St. Mary's City, MD -- The St. Mary's College men's lacrosse team opened their 2002 season with a 13-3 victory
over conference foe, Catholic University, on Tuesday afternoon at Seahawk Stadium.
Sophomore attacker Greg Scagliotti led a balanced Seahawk attack with two goals and one assist for three points.
Freshman Kevin Whalen, sophomore Terry Hagerty, sophomore Mike Gerpe, and sophomore Brian Kennedy all added
two goals each for the Seahawks.
Catholic (0-1, 0-1 CAC) was led by Ryan Welsh and Eric Slagle who had a goal and an assist each.
The Seahawks jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first period and never looked back. they added two more goals in the
second period while holding Catholic scoreless for a 7-1 halftime lead. The lead was extended to 9-3 after an evenly
played third period, while the Seahawks added four more goals in the final period and held the visitors scoreless in the
final 15 minutes.
The Seahawks totaled 39 shots in the contest, compared to just 17 for the Cardinals.
Senior goalkeeper Mike Watkins made seven saves in the contest for the Seahawks before giving way to Ben Frank who
made two saves in the final 9:57 of the contest. Matt Monfet made 14 saves in the contest for the Cardinals.
The Seahawks (1-0, 1-0 CAC) will next be in action on Wednesday, February 27, when they travel to conference rival
Salisbury University. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
