|St. Mary's City, MD -- Sophomore attack Pat Donovan (Arnold,
MD/Spaulding) scored four goals and added three assists in leading the
St. Mary's College men's lacrosse team to a 11-5 Capital Athletic
Conference (CAC) victory over Catholic University on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in the
conference, while the Cardinals fall to 8-4 overall and 2-4 in the CAC.
The Seahawks scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back. The Seahawks held a 4-0 lead after the first period with sophomore attack Dave Mueller (Baltimore, MD/North County) scoring two goals. Junior midfielder Pat Schmidt (Chestertown, MD/Penn State) scored the first goal of the second period to open up the 5-0 lead. The Cardinals snapped the scoring run with an unassisted goal by Mike Finegan. The Seahawks closed out the period by scoring the final two goals and took a 7-1 lead into halftime.
Donovan scored the first goal of the second half to give the Seahawks an 8-1 lead. The Cardinals made a run by scoring the next two goals to reduce the deficit to 8-3 with 8:52 remaining in the third period. Donovan snapped Catholic's mini-run with his fourth goal of the day, but sophomore attack Terence Kempf scored his second goal of the afternoon for Catholic to cut the Seahawks' lead to 9-4 after three periods.
The Seahawks put the game away in the fourth period with junior attack Shane Baxter (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) scored both Seahawk goals, including an extra man goal. The Cardinals picked up an extra man goal by sophomore attack Conor Kelly with 29 seconds remaining for the 11-5 final.
Donovan scored four goals and three assists for the Seahawks, with Baxter adding three goals. Mueller scored two goals and added one assist while Schmidt scored one goal and added two assists.
Freshman Rich Barr (Salisbury, MD/Worcester Prep) started in net and played the first half for the Seahawks. Barr made three saves and allowed one goal. Junior Miguel Snyder (Annapolis, MD/Seneca Valley) played 18:20 in net, allowing three goals and making six saves. Freshman Matt Wiest (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal) played the final 11:40 in net for the Seahawks. Wiest made two saves and allowed one extra man goal.
The Seahawks (9-5) will return to action on Saturday, April 17, when they host Marymount University in the first round of the CAC tournament. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
