| St. Mary's City, MD -- The St. Mary's College men's lacrosse team lost to #14 Hampden-Sydney College in a non-conference game on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 14-6. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-3 overall, while the Tigers improve to 2-0 with the win. Hampden-Sydney opened scoring in the first half with an unassisted goal from sophomore midfielder Thomas Jennings, and never looked back. After the first quarter, the Tigers led the Seahawks, 5-1, as St. Mary's scored their lone goal of the quarter on freshman midfielder Stu Wright's (Bethesda, MD/Good Counsel) goal at 8:43. St. Mary's capitalized on a few extra-man opportunities to tighten the game up, scoring two goals in the second quarter. Junior attack Pat Donovan (Arnold, MD/Spaulding) scored the first extra-man goal of the game off of an assist from junior attack Dave Mueller (Baltimore, MD/North County), then assisted on the next off of a strong shot from freshman midfielder Cyrus Albertson (Chevy Chase, MD/St. John's College) with one second remaining in the half. The Seahawks trailed 7-3 at halftime. Going into the second half up by four goals, the Tigers continued to outshoot and outscore the Seahawks, scoring three times in the third quarter, and four in the final period. The Seahawks closed scoring in the game, when senior attack Shane Baxter (Woodbine, MD/Glenelg) scored the fourth extra-man goal of the game for the Seahawks off of a pass from Mueller with 41 seconds remaining in play. For the Seahawks, junior goalkeeper Rich Barr (Salisbury, MD/Worcester Prep) had nine saves in 60 minutes of play. For Hampden-Sydney, senior goalkeeper Jeremy Bull had seven saves on 22 shots faced in 53:25, while his replacement, sophomore Greg Frankoski closed the game with one save and five shots faced in 6:35 of play. The Seahawks will host Wittenberg (OH) on Wednesday, March 9, in a non-conference contest. The contest is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. |
