| St. Mary's City, Md. - Junior midfielder Jeb Boland (Chevy Chase, MD/Georgetown
Prep) scored the eventual game-winning goal off an assist from junior
midfielder Jaime Test with 6:53 remaining in the contest to give the visiting
Mary Washington Eagles a 6-5 victory over the St. Mary's College (MD) Seahawks
on Thursday afternoon. The game was a Capital Athletic Conference tournament
semifinal contest with the Eagles now advancing to play Salisbury University,
who also advanced to the finals with an 11-3 victory over Goucher College in
the tournament's other semifinal match-up.
The Eagles (11-4), who never trailed in the contest, took a 3-0 lead after the first period of play. Senior attack Joe Boulier (Vianna, VA/Madison) opened the game's scoring with an unassisted goal at the 12:09 mark of the opening period. Freshman midfielder David Justen would make it 2-0 with an extra man goal off of an assist from sophomore attack Matt Wiles (Gainesville, VA/Paul VI) at the 10:45 mark. Wiles would then close out the scoring in the opening period with an unassisted goal with 4:54 showing on the clock. The Seahawks would come to life in the second period, cutting the lead at halftime to 3-2. Freshman attack Kevin Whalen (Bethesda, MD/Georgetown Prep) would score off of a nice pass from senior attack Andrew Toussaint (Potomac, MD/Georgetown Prep) at the 10:49 mark. Freshman midfielder Ryan McCauley (Crofton, MD/Arundel) would then make it a 3-2 game, scoring off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Aaron Lowe (Annapolis, MD/Severn) with 5:49 remaining in the half. The Seahawks would tie the game at 3-3 in the third period. Freshman Michael Gerpe (Wilton, CT/Wilton) would score off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Brian Kennedy (Arnold, MD/St. Mary's) at the 9:26 mark of the third period. The Eagles would retake the lead, 4-3, when senior attack Mike Malin (Baltimore, MD/Friends) would score off of a pass by Catesby Beck (Falls Church, VA/McLean) with 4:29 showing on the clock. The Seahawks would even the game at 4-4 heading into the final period of play when sophomore attack Greg Scagliotti (Allentown, PA/The Hill School) would score on a long break away pass from senior defender Ben Herr (Chestertown, MD/Queen Anne) with 1:22 remaining in the period. The Eagles would again take the lead in the fourth period. Junior midfielder Paul Schutzman (Wading River, NY/Shoreham Wading River) would score off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Mark Malone (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) at the 9:58 mark. The Eagles would then open up a two goals advantage when Boland would score with 6:53 remaining. The Seahawks would make one last push toward a victory when Toussaint would score an extra man goal off of an assist from Scagliotti with 5:37 remaining, but they would not be able to get any closer the remainder of the contest. The Seahawks (5-9) will next be in action on Sunday, April 28, when they travel to Skidmore College for their season finale. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. |
