The Game Story:
St. Mary's City, Md. -- The third-seeded St. Mary's College men's lacrosse team defeated sixth-seeded York College, 15-2, today at Seahawk Stadium in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) tournament. With the victory, the Seahawks advance to the second round where they will travel to second-seeded Mary Washington College, who defeated seventh-seeded Catholic, 18-5, on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore attacker Kevin Whalen (Bethesda, MD/Georgetown Prep) began the scoring onslaught for the Seahawks with an unassisted goal 3:48 into the match. Just two minutes later, the Seahawks extended the lead to 4-0, with goals from senior midfielder Wayne Hickok (Baltimore, MD/Park School), junior midfielder Alex Redmond (Baltimore, MD/Gilman), and Whalen again, this time assisted by freshman attacker Dave Mueller (Baltimore, MD/North County). The Spartans ended scoring in the first quarter, when sophomore attacker Ricky Cherba caught a pass from freshman midfielder Josh Papson and scored with 4:12 left to play in the first period.

Mueller opened the scoring in the second period for the Seahawks off a pass from sophomore attacker Shane Baxter (Woodbine, MD/Salisbury University). York answered back when Cherba scored his second goal of the day, assisted by senior midfielder Dave Larson. The Seahawks ended the half with one goal from Mueller and two from sophomore attacker Adam Gjerulff (Rockville, MD/Georgetown Prep). By the end of the first half, St. Mary's was leading 10-2.

The Seahawks controlled the scoring throughout the entire second half, holding the Spartans scoreless. Junior attacker Greg Scagliotti (Allentown, PA/The Hill School) scored 4:15 into the third quarter. Whalen tallied another unassisted goal at the 7:37 mark, his fourth goal of the game. Hickok scored his second goal of the contest with 5:15 to play in the third, assisted by Mueller. Senior defender Todd Brooks (Catonsville, MD/St. Paul's) scored the final goal of the third quarter, less than one minute after Hickok's tally. Freshman midfielder Matt O'Neill (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) scored the only goal of the fourth quarter, assisted by freshman attacker Jon Beam (Millersville, MD/Severna Park).

For the Seahawks, Whalen scored four goals and also tallied one assist. Mueller had eight points in the match, with three goals and five assists. Gjerulff and Hickok netted two goals apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Miguel Snyder (Annapolis, MD/Seneca Valley) played 18:17 and had no saves on four shots faced, while giving up both goals. Senior goalkeeper Dan Branigan (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills) played the remaining 41:43 for the Seahawks, and had four saves on 11 shots with no goals against.

For the Spartans, Cherba tallied both goals with Papson and Larson picking up the assists.
