Stevens Tech vs. Gordon

The Game Story:
HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 18, 2008) Ė Freshman goalkeeper Dave Decker made a season-high 17 saves and collected three ground balls in leading the Stevens Institute of Technology menís lacrosse team to an 8-5 win over Gordon College on Tuesday afternoon at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken, N.J. Decker stopped seven shots in the third quarter and a total of 11 in the second half while allowing just one goal over the final 35 minutes as the Ducks won their second game in a row to improve to 3-2 this season.

Senior defender/long-stick midfielder Nick Daniello
registered his first two points of the year as he finished with a goal and an assist. Daniello also had six ground balls against the Fighting Scots (2-3). Sophomore attacker Daniel Prakopcyk and senior attacker John Dolny had two goals and an assist apiece.

Meanwhile, freshman attacker Joey Simone and sophomore midfielder Bobby Steinhauser each had a goal and an assist in the win. Steinhauser also won eight faceoffs and had a game-high nine ground balls. Freshman midfielder Brandon Faubert scored his first career goal as a member of the Ducks.

Freshman midfielder Jordan MacIntosh (Ontario, Canada) and junior attacker Drew Straton (Carmel, Ind.) posted a goal and an assist apiece for Gordon. Sophomore midfielder Jake Patterson (Stony Brook, N.Y.) was 7-for-15 in faceoffs for the Fighting Scots. Freshman defender Stuart Knechtle (New Canaan, Conn.) picked up five ground balls in the loss. Freshman goalie Brett Becker (Sparta, N.J.) made 10 stops and had two ground balls.

Stevens opened the scoring just 2:04 into the contest when Simone found Steinhauser for an even-strength goal. The Fighting Scots answered with a pair of goals in the span of 3:09 to take a 2-1 lead midway through the first quarter. Daniello knotted the score up as he converted on a feed from Dolny. Faubert scored with 1:11 left in the period as Stevens regained the lead (3-2).

The Ducks pushed the margin to 4-2 less than six minutes into the second quarter when Prakopcyk scored on an unassisted effort. Once again, the Fighting Scots would not go away though as they received back-to-back goals from sophomore midfielder Danny Mack (Dublin, Ohio) and freshman midfielder Dan Utz (Rochester, N.Y.) to draw even at 4-all. Prakopcyk scored with 2:15 remaining before halftime off a pass from Steinhauser to give the Ducks a one-goal advantage (5-4) at the break.

Despite being out-shot 17-9 in the second half, the Ducks were able to out-score Gordon 3-1 over the final 30 minutes. Dolny tallied the only goal of the third quarter when he beat Becker off a feed from Daniello. Dolny added his second goal of the contest just over six minutes into the fourth quarter as Stevens opened a 7-4 lead. Senior attacker/midfielder R.J. Ancona found Dolny as the Ducks capitalized on an extra-man situation.

The Fighting Scots were able to close to within 7-5 with 7:43 remaining when sophomore midfielder Andrew Kirkaldy (Alberta, Canada) slipped a shot past Decker. Stevens put the game away when Simone tallied an even-strength goal with 5:21 left to reestablish a three-goal lead.

Both teams attempted 30 shots in the game. Stevens led 35-28 in ground balls and won 10-of-17 faceoffs. The Ducks, who were 1-for-5 with a man-up, converted on 16-of-24 clearing attempts (66.7 percent). Gordon was 18-for-22 in clears (81.8 percent).
