The Game Story:
HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 4, 2006) – Sophomore attack John Dolny (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) scored six goals on 10 shots in leading the Stevens Institute of Technology men’s lacrosse team to its first win of the 2006 season as the Ducks rolled past Knickerbocker Conference rival Montclair State University, 17-7, on Saturday afternoon at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, N.J. Dolny scored four times in the first half as Stevens built a comfortable 11-3 lead at the break. With the win, the Ducks improved to 1-1 (1-0 Knickerbocker) on the year while the Red Hawks dropped their second straight game to fall to 0-2 (0-2 Knickerbocker).

Stevens dominated play in the opening period as the Ducks out-shot Montclair 23-4. Dolny staked Stevens to a 1-0 lead with an even-strength goal off an assist from junior midfielder Joe Van Sickle (Amherst, N.H.) with 11:05 remaining in the period. Montclair responded just 19 seconds after Dolny’s goal as junior midfielder Evan Wehmeyer (Succasunna, N.J.) knotted the game at 1-1. Freshman attack Eric Smith (Oswego, N.Y.), Van Sickle and junior midfielder Mark Bielicky (Bridgewater, N.J.) scored three straight goals in the span of 2:27 as the Ducks grabbed a 4-1 lead. Freshman midfielder Matt Keating (Chatham, N.J.) tallied a man-up goal with 16 seconds left in the period as Stevens took a 5-1 lead into the second quarter.

Following a goal by Montclair senior attack James Kole (Montclair, N.J.), the Ducks scored the next six goals to blow open the game. Dolny started things once again with his second goal of the game. Van Sickle connected on back-to-back goals in a 28-second span. Junior midfielder Alex Richards (Beaverton, Ore.) added his fifth goal of the year with 6:35 to play in the half. Dolny picked up two more goals as Stevens went on top 11-2.

In the first half, the Ducks out-shot Montclair 35-13. Stevens owned a 56-33 advantage in shots for the game. The Ducks also converted 20 of 25 clear attempts (80 percent) in the contest.

Van Sickle finished with four goals and one assist for five points. Bielicky had a goal and three assists to go along with four ground balls. Senior midfielder Evan Swiker (Philadelphia, Pa.), who was 5-for-6 in faceoffs, and sophomore defender Nick Daniello (Cross River, N.Y.) had four ground balls apiece. Junior midfielder Matt Althauser (Bellevue, Wash.) collected three ground balls and was 7-for-11 in faceoffs.

Sophomore attack R.J. Ancona (West Islip, N.Y.) as well as senior midfielders Rich Benson (Rehoboth Beach, Del.) and Nick Mabunay (Sparta, N.J.) added single goals for the Ducks in the win.

Montclair, which converted on three of nine extra-man opportunities in the game, was led by Wehmeyer, who had two goals and an assist to go along with a team-high seven ground balls. Freshman attack A.J. Bachman (Montville, N.J.) added two goals for the Red Hawks. Sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, N.J.) made 19 saves in net for Montclair.

Ducks’ junior goalkeeper Jack Dunderdale (Ridgefield, Conn.) allowed two goals and made two saves before being replaced by freshman Burke Reynolds (Fallston, Md.) late in the second period. Reynolds made five saves and allowed four goals in 20 minutes of action. Sophomore Corey Vaillancourt (Lincoln Park, N.J.) made three stops and surrendered one goal in the fourth quarter.

Stevens, which opened the season with a tough 10-9 loss at Rochester Institute of Technology last Saturday, will be back in action on Wednesday when the Ducks host Manhattanville College in a Knickerbocker Conference game at 7 p.m.
