The Game Story:
HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 6, 2006) - Freshman midfielder Matt Keating (Chatham, N.J.) tallied four goals and an assist in leading 13th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology to a 17-6 victory over Ohio Wesleyan University to close out the regular season on Saturday at DeBaun Field in Hoboken, N.J. With the win, the Ducks improved to 13-3 on the year.

Ohio Wesleyan opened the scoring with a goal by senior midfielder Chris Riehl (Columbus, Ohio) with 8:39 to play in the first quarter. Stevens answered back with five straight goals to jump out to a 5-1 lead. Freshman defender Eric Smith (Oswego, N.Y.) put the Ducks on the board at 7:17 with his 13th goal of the season. Keating netted back-to-back goals within 11 seconds of each other to give Stevens a 3-1 advantage. Junior attack Patrick Bailey (Manassas, Va.) and junior midfielder Mark Bielicky (Bridgewater, N.J.) added late first-quarter goals for Stevens.

Freshman midfielder Phillip Johnson (Dallas, Texas) brought the Battling Bishops within 5-3 as he connected on back-to-back goals.

Junior midfielder Joe Van Sickle (Amherst, N.H.), senior midfielder Rob Leming (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and Keating pushed the Ducks lead to 8-3 with a three-goal outburst in a 3:27 span in the second stanza. Freshman attack Karl Zimmerman (Utica, Mich.) netted Ohio’s second goal of the quarter to bring the Battling Bishops within four at 8-4.

Following a goal by sophomore attack John Dolny (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) to end the second quarter, the Ducks scored seven straight third-quarter goals to take a 16-4 lead heading into the final period.

Dolny finished with three goals to go along with two ground balls. Sophomore midfielder J.R. Oreskovich (La Costa, Calif.), junior midfielder Matt Althauser (Bellevue, Wash.) and Bailey finished with two goals apiece. Senior midfielder Evan Swiker (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Ducks with eight ground balls and won nine of 15 faceoffs in the game.

Johnson led Ohio Wesleyan with two goals while senior attack Jarred Law (Littleton, Colo.) netted a goal and two assists.

Stevens dominated the statistics, out-shooting Ohio 54-29 and grabbing 43 ground balls to just 24 by the Battling Bishops. The Ducks were 15-for-26 in faceoffs and successful on 24 of 28 clear attempts.

The Stevens men's lacrosse team will learn of its opponent for the NCAA tournament on Sunday when the Division III brackets are released at around 9 p.m. live on CSTV.
