| SELINSGROVE, Pa. – With its 7-4 win over visiting Catholic on Saturday afternoon, the Susquehanna men’s lacrosse team officially clinched the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Landmark Conference Tournament. The win marked SU’s first-ever against Catholic. The Crusaders’ semifinal opponent in the Landmark Conference is still to be determined as many teams still have one conference game remaining. It was a chippy game with a combined 10 minutes of penalty time but SU (10-5, 4-2) held off the Cardinals (6-9, 1-4) to come away with the win. Connor Moran (Delafield, Wisc./Kettle Moraine) had two goals and three assists for a game-high five points while Tylere Fritts (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and Austen Lein (New Vernon, N.J./Madison) added two goals apiece. Goalie Will Torrence (Wallingford, Pa./Strath Haven) had a solid day in goal, racking up 11 saves in his 60 minutes of work and allowing only four goals, including scoreless first and third quarters. As a team, SU out-shot Catholic 28-17 and won nine of 15 face-offs. The Crusaders also allowed Catholic to score on just one of its six extra-man opportunities. The first quarter saw Susquehanna go up 4-0 in with Fritts accounting for two of those four goals, including his second one with 1:03 left in the quarter that made it 4-0. Catholic got on the board less than three minutes into the second quarter on a goal from Brendan Englert, the first of back-to-back goals for the Cardinals that cut SU’s lead in half (4-2). Fortunately, Moran closed out the half with two unanswered goals over a 20-second span to put the Crusaders back up by four (6-2) at halftime. The second-half saw much less scoring as neither team found the back of the net in the third quarter. Catholic then made it a 6-3 game with a goal at the 12:37 mark of the fourth quarter but Lein countered with his own goal less than 30 seconds later to keep the Crusaders up 7-3. Catholic’s Brian Keith scored his second goal of the quarter with 3:01 on the clock but SU was able to hold the Cardinals scoreless for the remainder of the game. Susquehanna is back home next Saturday, April 27, with a 1 p.m. game against Albright. The team’s senior members will be honored prior to the start of the game. |
