Swarthmore vs. Dickinson

The Game Story:
(Swarthmore, Pa.) - The Dickinson College men's lacrosse team passed its first Centennial Conference test, holding off Swarthmore, 7-6 on Saturday. The Red Devils, ranked 10th in the USILA national poll, improved to 8-0 on the season. They extend their school record best start and school record unbeaten streak to eight games.

The Centennial Conference has proven to be one of the toughest around, and this year that may be more apparent than ever. With the exception of Gettysburg's 14-2 win over Muhlenberg, every conference game this season has been decided by one goal.

Sophomore Sam Greenberg (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) tallied the last three goals for Dickinson and the defense held on in the final seconds to lead the Devils to victory in their conference opener.

The Devils struck first and the teams traded goals with Swarthmore taking a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. Swarthmore added one to start the second period and held a 5-3 advantage at the break.

Dickinson dominated the third quater, outscoring the Garnet 3-0 to take a 6-5 lead into the final 15 minutes. Greenburg tied the game with an assist from Matt Cherry (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) and put the Devils up on an extra-man goal, assisted by Chris Dodson (Bethesda, Md./Landon).

Greenberg picked-up a ground ball and scored unassisted with 8:31 remaining in regulation to give the Devils a 7-5 cushion. Tyler Bradshaw broke though, scoring with 2:20 left to play to pull the Garnet within one.

Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) won the face-off, giving Dickinson a key possesssion. Swarthmore forced a turnover and went man-up following a roughing penalty on the Devils.

Senior goaltender Tyler Magann (Easton, Pa./The Hill School) turned away one shot and another hit the post with seven seconds to play, but the Devils would hold on for the win.

Greenberg finished with three goals while Dodson added two goals and an assist. Cherry scored once and tallied two assists. Senior Ted Sirvaitis (Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) also scored for the Devils.

Murray dominated the face-offs, winning 13-of-17 on the day, controlling nine ground balls and handing out an assist. Chris Breslin (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) controlled five ground balls on defense while Dewey Dubord (Freeport, Maine/Governor Dummer) caused four turnovers and picked-up five GBs in the midfield. John Haire (Darien, Conn./Darien) forced three turnovers on the day.

Magann stopped eight shots in the game, adding four ground balls and a caused turnover.

Bradshaw led Swarthmore (1-4, 0-2) with two goals and two assists while Keven Friedenberg made 15 saves in goal.

The Red Devils (8-0, 1-0) return home to face #1-ranked Gettysburg College on Wednesday. Opening face-off is set for 3:30 pm.
