| HARTFORD, CT - Freshman attackman Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, N.Y.) scored four goals to lead the Amherst College Lord Jeffs to a 13-7 win over the Trinity College Bantams in men’s lacrosse action this afternoon at Jessee/Miller Field. Trinity, ranked No. 7 in New England, falls to 3-2 (1-1 NESCAC), while Amherst, ranked No. 6 in New England, improves to 3-1 (1-0 NESCAC).
Junior attackman Mike Allison (West Nyack, N.Y.), freshman attackman Chris Hahm (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), and Derek Cherney each posted a goal to capture the lead for the Lord Jeffs in the first quarter. The Bantams got on the board in the first quarter as sophomore midfielder Roddy Tilt (Katonah, N.Y.) scored off a pass from freshman attackman Curtis Kahn (Cohasset, Mass.) to cut the lead to 3-1. Trinity sophomore midfielder Chad Burdette (Owings Mills Md.) narrowed the gap in the second quarter with a goal at the 9:55 mark to bring Trinity within one goal. The Lord Jeffs retaliated a minute later as Derek Cherney scored his second goal of the game at 8:46. Trinity sophomore midfielder Nick Petri (Framingham, Mass) closed the half scoring with only 5.4 second left leaving the Bantams down 4-3 at halftime. Amherst erupted in the third quarter adding four goals to the scoreboard. Junior attack Alex Casertano (Millbrook, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the game off a pass from Allison at the 10:51 mark. Junior midfielder Josh Cherney (Chappaqua, N.Y.) added another goal for the Lord Jeffs, his first goal, at the 5:54 mark. Derek Cherney quickly followed with his fourth goal of the game at the 6:27 mark. Allison scored his second goal of the game increased the third-quarter lead to 7-4 at the 1:43 mark. Trinity sophomore Coly Smith (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the game, but it was the only offense the Bantams could muster in the third quarter. Senior attackman James Skiff (Portland, Maine) opened the fourth quarter with a goal a minute into the final period to bring the Bantams with in two goals. Allison brought the lead to three again with a score at the 12:22 mark. The Bantams responded with an unassisted goal from Kahn. Three unanswered Amherst goals sealed the win for the Lord Jeffs. Trinity senior goalie Geoff Shaw (Charlotte, N.C.) made 14 saves for the Bantams, while Amherst junior goalie Cushing Donelan (Noroton, Conn.) was credited with 12 stops. |
