| Hartford, Conn. - Junior midfielder Scott Wilbur (Victor, N.Y.) notched four
goals and two assists to lead the visiting Williams College Ephs to a 9-8 win
over the Trinity College Bantams in New England Small College Athletic
Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action this afternoon at Jessee/Miller
Field. Trinity, ranked No. 9 in New England, falls to 5-5 overall and 2-4 in
the NESCAC with its first loss in the lass four games, while the Ephs, ranked
No. 5 in New England, improves to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the league.
Trinity came back from an 8-5 deficit in the fourth quarter, scoring three
unanswered goals to tie the score on a score from senior tri-captain attackman
Ravi Pillay (Falls Church, Va.) to freshman midfielder Coly Smith (Oyster Bay,
N.Y.) with 5:21 remaining in the game. Williams took the lead back at the 4:12
mark when sophomore attackman Matt Barhight (Lutherville, Md.) found freshman
attackman Eric Gottenborg (Greenwood Village, Colo.) for what proved to be the
game-winner. Williams tried to hold the ball for the final four minutes, but Trinity continued to force turnovers only to give the ball right back on a miscue of their own. The Bantam defense took over possession for one final time on a Williams violation with :45 on the clock, but Smith was stripped of the ball by an Eph defender to keep Trinity from attempting a game-tying shot. Pillay, and Smith each tallied two goals and an assist for Trinity, while junior attackmen Sandy Leighton (Blue Bell, Pa.) and James Skiff (Portland, Maine) added two goals and two assists, respectively. Bantam junior Geoff Shaw (Charlotte, N.C.) made 10 saves in goal. Barhight, sophomore defense Trevor Scott (Ridgewood, N.J.), and senior midfielder Andrew Layng (New Canaan, Conn.) had a goal and an assist apiece for Williams, while junior goalie Baemen Vertovez (West Islip, N.Y.) stopped 12 shots. Trinity outshot the Ephs, 38-23. |
