|MEDFORD -- Senior Harlow Voorhees (Chevy Chase, MD) and freshman Alex Casertano (Millbrook, NJ) scored four
goals apiece to lead visiting Amherst College to a 13-7 victory over Tufts University in New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon.
Three unanswered goals by that pair, two from Voorhees and one from Casertano, early in the fourth quarter turned a
one-goal Amherst lead into a 10-6 margin at 9:46 of the final period. The Lord Jeffs extended the lead to 12-6 over the next
five minutes and eventually earned their first road victory of the season. Amherst improved to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in the
conference, while Tufts dropped to 6-4 and 3-3. The Jumbos were ranked fourth in the latest New England Division III poll,
and Amherst was tied for ninth.
The Jeffs, who never trailed in the game, charged to a 3-0 early lead behind two goals from Casertano. Host Tufts, which
knocked off previously unbeaten in NESCAC Colby College on Saturday, rallied to tie the score at 3-3 on a trio of goals
within a span of 69 seconds in the middle of the first period. Casertano scored his third of the game and Voorhees his first
as Amherst blanked Tufts in the second period to lead 5-3 at the half.
The Jumbos were within one goal twice in the second half. Senior Jon Zissi's (Winchester, MA) second goal of the game
cut the Amherst lead to 6-5 at 3:52 of the third. A goal by senior Jack Palmer (Vestal, NY) at 14:27 of the fourth quarter
had Tufts within 7-6. The Jeffs scored the next five to put the game away.
Amherst freshman Cushing Donelan (Noroton, CT) made a few fine saves in the second half and earned the win with nine
total. Tufts senior Kirk Lutwyler (Ridgewood, NJ) had seven in the second half and 13 total. Junior Tucker Sowers
(Ridgewood, NJ) scored twice for Amherst. The Jeffs had assists on 11 of their 13 goals. For Tufts, freshman Bryan
Griffin (West Islip, NY) joined Zissi in scoring twice.
