| MEDFORD ^S Senior tri-captain Bryan Griffin (West Islip, NY) scored four goals with three assists to tie the Tufts University men^Ys lacrosse all-time scoring record and lead the #9 Jumbos to an 18-3 victory over MIT on opening day 2005 at snow-covered Bello Field on Saturday. By halftime, Griffin had tied the record and Tufts had the game well in hand. With his fourth goal of the game, Griffin ^S set up alone in front of the cage by junior Rory Doucette (Merrick, NY) ^S scored his 191st point to tie Dan Kollar^Ys Jumbo mark set from 1998-2001. The goal gave the Jumbos a 12-0 lead in the game. MIT scored back-to-back goals a minute apart late in the first half, by Paul Steiner (Palos Verdes, CA) and Jonathan Stolmeier (San Antonio, TX), to make the score 12-2. Tufts was always in charge though, and Coach Mike Daly was able to go deep into the bench for the second half. Fifteen Jumbos scored points overall, including four by sophomore Mark Warner (Wading River, NY) on two goals and two assists. Doug Smith (Washington, DC), Mike Cortese (Utica, NY) and Connor Ginsberg (New Haven, CT) each scored their first collegiate goal. Senior Christopher Ng (East Meadow, NY) made 17 saves in the MIT cage, where play was especially difficult considering the steady snowfall throughout the game. Senior tri-captain Luke Chicco (Merrick, NY) and classmate Andy Starr (Weston, MA) split time in the Tufts goal and had two saves apiece. Tufts (1-0) has now won six straight regular-season games and 12 of its last 14 overall. MIT is now 0-1. |
