| MEDFORD - The Tufts University men's lacrosse team took a 12-9 NESCAC win over Williams College on Bello Field Saturday. The Jumbos were led by two goals apiece from Mark Warner (Wading River, NY), Brett Holm (Longmeadow, MA), Mike O'Brien (Concord, MA) and Michael Hughes (Branford, CT). Tufts darted to a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the game, but Williams rallied with four unanswered goals for a 4-3 advantage at the end of the first period. Tufts (7-2 overall, 3-1 NESCAC) out-scored the Ephs (3-4, 1-3) 3-1 in the second period to lead 6-5 at the half. Warner's goals late in the second period and early in the third put Tufts ahead for good. However, Williams would keep it close. Sophomore Dixon Hargrove (Wallingford, PA) scored at 9:05 of the third to cut the Jumbo lead to 7-6. After Hughes and Holm scored for Tufts, a goal by Williams senior James Lee (Darien, CT) closed the gap to 9-7 at the end of three. After the teams traded goals early in the fourth, it was still only a two-goal game (10-8). However, goals by Chris Connelly (Wilton, CT) and Holm just eight seconds apart gave the hosts some breathing room with a 12-8 advantage at the 4:13 mark. The Tufts defense would close it down from there, with only one more Williams goal added to the scoreboard. Lee was the game-high scorer with three goals and an assist for four points to lead Williams. Tim Pingree (Boston, MA) added two goals to the Eph attack. Rob Hawkins (Marblehead, MA) stopped 10 shots in the Williams cage. Brian Morrissey (Winchester, MA) had five ground balls. Senior co-captain Rory Doucette (Merrick, NY) won 13 of 19 face-offs for Tufts and had a remarkable 12 ground balls. Freshman goalie Matt Harrigan (Darnestown, MD) finished with nine saves. |
