|ROCHESTER, NY – No. 11 Union men's lacrosse (11-4, 5-1 Liberty League) fell 8-6 to No. 7 RIT (14-2, 5-1 Liberty League) in the Liberty League Championship Game at RIT Field on Sunday afternoon.|
Junior attack Nolan Connors led Union with two goals and an assist, and sophomore attack Rob Santangelo had a goal and an assist for the Dutchmen, who were attempting to win the league title for the second straight season.
RIT leading scorer Tyler Russell had three goals and an assist and goalie Anthony DeLeo (13-2) made 12 saves to lead the Tigers. Senior goalie Sean Aaron (11-4) made 13 stops in net for Union.
Trailing 7-3 with 13:32 remaining in the fourth quarter, Union rallied for three of the next four goals in the contest to cut the RIT lead to two with 8:48 to play in regulation.
Union started the run on man-up goals from freshman attack Adam Rosenthal with 11:41 to go and Santangelo at the 10:40 mark.
RIT's Russell notched his third goal of the game from in close just 31 seconds later to give the Tigers a three goal lead, but Connors answered for Union at the 8:48 mark to set up an exciting finish.
DeLeo made two great stops on shots from Santangelo and Connors from just outside the goal crease in the final minutes of the contest to help seal the win for the Tigers.
Union also pulled within two at 5-3 early in the second half on senior attack Ted McKenna's team-leading 26th goal of the season just 1:32 into the half. But RIT's Jordan Collins-Hartwig scored with 5:59 to go in the third quarter, and A.J. Tingle added another goal for the Tigers with 13:32 to play in the fourth quarter to extend the lead before Union's late rally.
In a tight opening quarter of play, Union got off to a great start when Connors cut in front of the net at the 5:33 mark of the first quarter and beat DeLeo to give the Dutchmen a 1-0 lead
RIT's Kyle Aquin evened the score with 3:27 to play in the quarter, scoring on a wide-angle shot from 10 yards out to even the contest.
The Tigers carried the momentum into the second quarter, rattling off four straight goals and dominating possession.
RIT leading scorer Tyler Russell opened the run on the Tigers' first possession of the quarter, beating Aaron from in close at the :55 mark to give the home team the lead.
Aquin added his second of the game on a nice one-on-one move at the 3:48 mark, and Russell scored his second of the contest at the 5:17 mark. RIT freshman Alistair Warren made it 5-1 in favor of the Tigers with 5:43 to play in the half, before Union's Ethan Meyer ended the run, scoring with 1:46 to go in the quarter to cut the RIT lead to three before halftime.
RIT held a 30-29 advantage on ground balls in the contest, while Union had the edge on faceoffs at 11-for-18 with junior midfielder Alex Stone leading the way at 8-for-13.
Junior attack Nolan Connors (four goals, assist), sophomore attack Rob Santangelo (two goals, four assists), and senior defenseman Matt Livingston were named to the Liberty League All-Tournament Team.
