The Game Story:
SCHENECTADY, NY – Led by four goals from Mike Sampson (Columbus, OH/ Upper Arlington), the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute men’s lacrosse team edged Union College, 10-9, Saturday afternoon in Liberty League action at Frank Bailey Field. The Dutchmen were led by midfielder Jon Miller (Yarmouth, ME/ Yarmouth), who registered a season-high four goals in the game.

Rensselaer (8-0, 2-0 Liberty League) jumped out to a 4-1 first-quarter lead on a goal by Sampson, a pair of scores by Alex McDiarmid (New Hartford, NY/ New Hartford), and a tally by PJ McComb (Newington, CT/ Newington). Union’s lone tally in the frame came from freshman Scott Garibaldi (Summit, NJ/ Summit), who finished the day with two goals and an assist.

The Dutchmen (2-4, 0-1 Liberty League) took control in the second quarter, rattling off three unanswered goals late in the stanza to cut the Red Hawks’ lead to 6-5 at the end of the half. Senior captain Tom Simmons (Salisbury, CT/ Salisbury School) sparked the comeback at 7:23 with his first of two goals in the game. Miller followed less than a minute later, and Garibaldi brought Union within one with just over a minute and a half to play.

Rensselaer netted two goals early in the third quarter to extend its lead to 8-5 on goals by Sampson and Briggs Thompson (South Lyme, CT/ East Lyme) before Miller picked up his third goal of the game with 4:38 left to play in the frame.

The Dutchmen outscored their visitor in the final quarter, netting their last goal with only one second left in the game, but Rensselaer goaltender John Thibdeau (Altamont, NY/ Bethlehem) made four saves in the frame to extend the Red Hawks’ winning streak to eight games. Thibdeau made 10 saves on the day.

Union senior captain Rob Oram (New Canaan, CT/ New Canaan) stopped 11 shots in the Dutchmen’s Liberty League and home opener.

The Dutchmen are back in action on Tuesday, April 3, in a 4 p.m. game at Oswego. Union returns to Bailey Field for a 7 p.m. game against Hartwick on Wednesday, April 11.
