Union vs. Saint Lawrence

The Game Story:
SCHENECTADY, NY – Sophomore midfielder Joe Cordrey scored three goals, junior attack Ted McKenna had two goals and an assist, and junior goaltender Sean Aaron made nine saves as Union men's lacrosse (6-2, 2-0 Liberty League) recorded its first victory over St. Lawrence (3-6, 0-2 Liberty League) in ten years, a 10-6 victory at Frank Bailey Field.

Union's last victory over St. Lawrence came on April 20, 2001, a game that was also played at home.

For the game, the teams matched each other with 15 shots apiece, with Union holding a 35-31 advantage on ground balls.

After falling behind 1-0 early in the first quarter, the Dutchmen rallied for seven straight tallies to close out the first half, taking control of the game early. McKenna, Cordrey, junior midfielder Ethan Meyer and sophomore midfielder Kyle Christine each scored to close out the first quarter, giving Union a 4-1 lead.

Freshman attack Nate Greenberg opened up the scoring for the Dutchmen with 6:52 remaining in the second quarter. McKenna added his second goal of the half with 2:25 remaining, and senior attack Brendan Kinnane added a man up goal with 1:31 to play to give Union a 7-1 lead going into the half. Aaron stopped six of seven shots faced in the half, including five in the second quarter as St. Lawrence turned up the pressure on offense.

The Saints scored twice to open the second half as Dave Schoetller and Matt Pope scored at even strength to cut the Union lead to 7-3. The Dutchmen answered with three straight goals to close out the third quarter, two by Cordrey at 9:19 and 2:01, and one by Kinnane at 4:30 to take a commanding 10-3 lead.

The Saints made a late run in the fourth quarter with three straight goals from Pope (2:33), Davey Hovey (man-up goal at 1:13) and Kyle Jacobson (man-down goal with 42 seconds to play), but the Dutchmen were able to secure their third straight victory.

Union will take on Williams in a road contest on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
