Union vs. Williams

The Game Story:
SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior midfielder Ethan Meyer scored three goals, but No. 5 Union men's lacrosse (7-2) fell 8-6 to Williams (3-6) at Frank Bailey Field.

Colton Growney had two goals and an assist, and Sam Hargrove added two goals and five ground balls to lead the Ephs, who earned the upset win in Schenectady.

Trailing 5-2 entering the fourth quarter, Union scored four of the next five goals in the game to tie the game at 6-6. Meyer scored his ninth and 10th goals of the season at 9:14 and 4:35 of the fourth quarter to even the game heading into the final minutes of regulation.

But Williams midfielders Will Stewart and Michael Acierno scored at 3:07 and 1:09 to put the game out of reach. Acierno burned the final seconds off a Union man-up opportunity, evaded two defenders and scored to clinch the win for the Ephs.

Union senior goalie Sean Aaron made 12 stops in net, while Williams goalie Sean Dougherty stopped 14 shots. Union held a 44-27 advantage in total shots for the contest, including a 15-6 margin in the fourth quarter

The Dutchmen got off to a strong start, taking a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Meyer scored his first goal of the night on Union's first possession of the game at the 13:40 mark.

Senior attack Ted McKenna recorded his team-leading 16th goal of the season with 38 seconds left in the first quarter, cutting in front from behind the net for a goal from two feet out to give the Dutchmen a 2-0 lead.

Williams rallied for five unanswered goals, including two in the second quarter by Growney to even the game at 2-2 heading into the second half. Growney scored unassisted at 13:03, then added another on a nice feed from Charles Gephart at 7:59 to even the contest.

Williams' Mercios Rhodes gave the Ephs the lead at 14:14 of the third quarter, and Hargrove added goals at 12:05 and 4:39 to give Williams its largest lead of the night.

Union will host rival RPI on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. while Williams will take on Colby in its next contest.
