|The Game Story:|
|PORTLAND, Maine -- Junior midfielder Michael Woods (Kittery Point, Maine) scored an unassisted goal 19 seconds into overtime to lift the University of New England to a 12-11 victory over Lasell College in a men's lacrosse mutual opener Wednesday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Stadium.|
Woods' unassisted tally in the extra session came after junior Steve Smith (Walpole, Mass.) had tied the game for the Nor'easters with 1:03 remaining in regulation.
Woods finished with four goals, while sophomore Dylan Thomas (Pleasantville, N.Y.) had three and a pair of assists. First-year Tyler Thomas (Pleasantville, N.Y.) scored twice and dished out three assists for the Nor'easters.
Junior Sean Speciale (Hillsborough, N.J.) and first-year Andrew Puopolo (Duxbury, Mass.) led the Lasers with three goals apiece. Senior Brian Yepez (Hillsborough, N.J.) chipped in a goal and three assists.
The Nor'easters built a 8-1 lead in the second period and looked as if they were going to little trouble with the Lasers. Lasell responded with three goals in the final 1:29 to cut the deficit to 8-4 heading into halftime.
The Lasers would score the lone tally in the third, then five of the first six goals in the fourth frame to take a 10-9 lead with 3:52 remaining.
Tyler Thomas countered for UNE nine seconds later to knot the score at 10 before Puopolo notched an unassisted goal at the 1:45 mark to put the visitors back on top. Dylan Thomas set-up Smith's game-tying score with just over a minute left in regulation, setting the stage for Woods' heroics.
UNE sophomore Nate Porter (Cohasset, Mass.) and Lasell junior Eric Walsh (Weymouth, Mass.) each recorded nine saves in goal.
Both teams return to action Saturday at home. The Nor'easters host Wheaton College, while the Lasers entertain Bates College. Each contest is slated to start at 1 p.m.
