Univ Of New England vs. Thomas
March 4, 2008
The Game Story:
PORTLAND, Maine -- Dan Leyden '09 (Northfield, Mass.) and Luke DiFiore '11 (Gloucester, Mass.) each scored four goals as the University of New England Nor'easters opened their season with a 19-4 win over Thomas College in a non-conference men's lacrosse match played in a steady rain at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

The Nor'easters would struggle in the first period, failing to mount much of an attack despite owning a decided advantage in time of possession. Both teams would go scoreless in the first frame.

The Terriers opened the scoring with 34 seconds gone in the second when Kolby Peckham '10 (West Gardiner, Maine) tallied an unassisted goal.

UNE would answer by scoring the final four goals of the quarter. DiFiore drew the Nor'easters even, then Leyden put home consecutive scores to give the Nor'easters a 3-1 lead. Mike Sagaert '10 (Colorado Springs, Colo.) would then make the score 4-1 with 1:23 to play before intermission.

UNE put the match away with seven unanswered goals in the third. DiFiore scored three times, including his second man-up goal of the match.

The Nor'easters would continue to pour it on in the fourth, scoring eight more times. All told, UNE notched 17 unanswered goals from the second period to midway through the fourth.

Leyden added four assists to his four-goal output for a career single-game high of eight points. Co-captain Jon Ebert '08 (Auburn, N.H.) finished with two goals and three assists.

UNE goalie Andy Briggs '09 (Scituate, R.I.) played the first 47:01 in goal for the Nor'easters, recording eight saves to earn the victory.

Mike Ross '08 (York, Maine) had a pair of goals for Thomas (0-1), while Kevin Averill '11 (New Sharon, Maine) stopped 13 shots.

UNE held a wide margin in both shots (59-20) and ground balls (57-33).

The Nor'easters (1-0) are idle until their trip to Florida next week. The Big Blue will face Moravian College on March 9 and Rollins College on March 11.
