The Game Story:
KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Joe Mauri, Max Tcheyan and Mike Distler each had four goals Sunday afternoon at Capt. Tomb Field, leading visiting Haverford (6-2) to an 18-12 victory over the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (0-3) in men's lacrosse action.

The host Mariners were led by Sean Dougherty's second-consecutive, four-goal contest. Jim Flannery added four points on two goals and as many assists, while Matt McCarthy chipped in with two goals.

McCarthy's first tally of the day came with one minute left in the opening period, cutting a Haverford lead down to 3-2. The Fords ripped off the first three goals of the second frame to take a 6-2 lead, before USMMA responded with Dougherty's second man-up goal on the afternoon.

Dougherty completed his hat trick at the halftime horn, firing in a ground-ball shot from midfield after a restart with four seconds left, and the Blue and Gray trailed 8-4 at the break.

Haverford broke the game open with four straight goals to start the second half, before Tony Buleza's man-down goal with 2:30 left in the third period pulled USMMA to within 12-5.

The teams combined for 13 goals in the final frame, and USMMA scored six of the game's final eight goals in the last 7:08 of the contest. Mike Doris scored his first goal of the year, as did Dan Gately.





Joe Welsh (five ground balls) won 15 of his 26 face-offs on the afternoon, while team captain Dave Shafer and Dougherty each scooped up a team-best six ground balls for USMMA.

Distler added three assists on the day, while Tcheyan notched a pair of helpers. Sebastian Mankowski picked up a game-high eight ground balls on the afternoon.

Head coach Tom Gill's USMMA squad is back in action Friday night (Mar. 25), when they play host to Oneonta State in a 6 p.m. opening face-off at Capt. Tomb Field.
