Despite scoring four of the game's final six goals, the United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (4-6) couldn't recover from an early 6-0 deficit, falling to the Red Hawks of Montclair State University (4-5) by a final score of 13-9.

Kings Point was led by junior attacker Matt Cowles, junior midfielder Joseph Purcell, and freshmen attacker Geoff Harty who each scored two goals apiece. Junior attacker Delaney Oksman had a game-high four assists, and sophomore midfielder Andrew Kratch went 8 for 16 on face-off attempts, collecting a team-high eight ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Matt Kantor took the loss in goal for the Mariners, playing the first half and allowing eight goals on 12 shots.

For the Red Hawks, senior attacker Tyler Meth, junior attacker Jack Skeels, and sophomore midfielder Joel Van Der Wal all had four points each. Junior midfielder Kenneth Bogert controlled 60% of face-offs he took winning 15 of 25 and pouncing on a game-high 11 groundballs. Freshman goalkeeper Mark Galander earned the win in net stopping five of the 14 Mariner shots on goal.

Montclair jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after scoring six goals in the first 10 plus minutes of play from five different scorers. The Mariners responded with 2:51 remaining in the quarter when Purcell fired a shot past Galander to put USMMA on the board for the first time. The Red Hawks controlled play by winning six of eight first period faceoffs and created chances by outshooting the Mariners 11-7.

Kings Point would score the first goal of the second quarter when Harty hit the back of the net at the 13:41 mark. However, the two teams would end up trading goals for the remainder of the half sending the Mariners into the locker-rooms at halftime with an 8-4 deficit.

The Mariners couldn't seem to pick up momentum in the third, giving up an early goal to Van Der Wall at the 11:08 mark. Even though freshman midfielder Troy Smith responded quickly with a goal of his own at 8:32, two minutes later freshman attacker John Barney found Meth for the eventual game winner, putting the Red Hawks up 10-5.

Despite putting together a late rally, Kings Point couldn't dig themselves out of their early hole and ended up falling 13-9 to drop them two games below .500 for the third time this season.

USMMA will be on the road to face-off against University of Scranton Saturday April 7th at 1:00 PM in a Landmark Conference matchup.
