|The Game Story:|
|KINGS POINT, N.Y. (February 20, 2013) – Senior Harrison Dorne (Morristown, N.J.) paced the No. 7 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team to a 14-8 season-opening victory at the United States Merchant Marine Academy with six points on five goals and one assist. Dorne was one of five Ducks to net at least one goal in the win.|
Stevens actually fell behind early in the game after USMMA scored the first two goals on the contest in the opening 4:35 of the first quarter. The Ducks, however, responded with three-straight scores over a two-minute span to take their first lead of the showdown with 6:51 to go.
Senior Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.) registered the first two scores, both unassisted for the Ducks in just over a minute apart from each other. Dupras finished the game with a hat trick and assisted on another tally.
Just 46 seconds after Dupras' back-to-back scores, sophomore Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) put Stevens ahead for the first time on the third consecutive unassisted goal. After the Mariners knotted the tussle at 3-3 with just over four minutes left in the opening period, Dorne found the back of the net for the first time to end the scoring of the first 15 minutes.
Senior Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) netted both of his scores to open up the second quarter and give the Ducks a 6-3 advantage with 6:16 left before halftime. Both of Philippi's goals were unassisted to mark six consecutive for Stevens up to that point in the game.
Dorne and Dupras then hooked up for a score at 4:17 to give the Ducks a four-goal cushion before freshman Connor O'Shea (Ridgewood, N.J.) contributed his first collegiate goal off a feed from junior Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.) at the 3:16 mark. O'Shea's goal ended the offense in the first half and sent Stevens into the break with an 8-3 lead.
USMMA ended the Ducks' five-goal string with the first tally of the final 30 minutes to bring the matchup back to a four-score differential. Exactly one minute later, Dupras posted his hat trick as him and Dorne switched roles on the ninth Stevens goal.
Both teams traded the next six goals from the 7:12 mark of the third until 10:03 remaining in the final period. O'Shea scored once, while Dorne picked up his final two goals to push Stevens to a 13-7 edge. Maroon and O'Shea assisted on each tally.
After the final Mariners score at 5:16, Maroon capped off the night with his second marker and secured the win for Stevens.
At the face-off “X”, freshman Brett Incollingo (Yardley, Pa.) won 11-of-17 faceoffs, while senior Marc Malecki (Hillsborough, N.J.) went 4-for-6. Incollingo also led Stevens with six groundballs, and Culloty forced three turnovers for a team-best.
In goal for the Ducks, sophomore Matthew Deiner (Millstone Twp., N.J.) picked up the victory with seven saves in all 60 minutes. Deiner also caused two turnovers.
Stevens dominated the shot category, holding a 51-26 advantage, and scooped up 20 groundballs to the Mariners' 16. The Ducks also held a slim edge in clears, 12-11, and shutdown USMMA on all three man-up chances.
